     i   heard   you   went   out   onto   the   surface   today.   i   hadn't   even   realized   we'd   landed   until   i   saw   how   empty   the   usual   food   court   was.   hey,   did   you   know   that   the   eclipse   is   behind   us   here?   i   did   some   research   on   what   that   means.   on   this   planet,   the   sun   is   never   visible.   no   one   understands   why   or   how,   but   the   sun   is   in   a   spot   that   you   can't   see   from   the   surface.   so   when   there's   an   eclipse,   it's   "behind"   the   planet.   they   feel   it,   but   they   don't   see   it   the   way   we   do   on   other   planets.

     there   is   supposed   to   be   an   eclipse   today.   i'm   assuming   that's   why   we   docked   today   ...   so   everyone   could   see   it.   or   feel   it,   anyway.   by   the   time   you   read   this,   it'll   have   happened.

     did   you   feel   it?   please   tell   me   what   it   was   like.   was   it   cold?   the   temperature   on   the   ship   is   always   perfect,   so   it   isn't   something   we   actively   think   about.   i   don't   feel   hot   or   cold   right   now;   i   feel   fine.   as   i'm   writing   this,   are   you   cold?   do   you   feel   the   sun,   even   if   you   never   see   it?   are   you   warmer   back   on   the   ship?   were   you   warmer   before   the   solar   eclipse?

“oh,    boyfriend!¹”    the    sing-song    of    her    voice    announces    her    almost    as    well    as    her    volume    or    the    door    sliding    open    ahead    of    her.    he's    declared    them    no    such    thing,    but    she    places    her    bets    on    how    he'll    react    to    her    presumption.    “it    is    i,    the    love    of    your    life.”    her    smile    only    grows    to    see    him    reclined    on    his    back    atop    his    sheets,    probably    enjoying    a    quiet    evening    without    her    intrusion.    it    doesn't    stop    her    from    flopping    onto    her    belly    beside    him.    she    props    herself    onto    her    elbows    and    peers    down    at    him,    smile    going    gentle    up    close.    it    doesn't    escape    him    how    pretty    he    is;    not    in    the    least.    taking    another    risk,    she    leans    down    and    presses    their    lips    together.    “hi,”    she    whispers    against    his    mouth    before    lightly    nudging    her    nose    against    his.    “missed    you.”    an    audacious    thing    to    say    after    the    disaster    that    was    their    first    date    last    night,    but    saying    it    wouldn't    be    half    as    satisfying    otherwise.

“there    you    go    again,    getting    mad    at    someone    else    and    taking    it    out    on    me¹    ...    mav,    if    you    don't    want    this,    i'm    not    holding    you    hostage.”
