I wish people (fandoms) were normal about same-sex pairings. shipping in general, but shipping two men together especially. I'm not talking about people who are passionate about representation, I'm talking about people who care too much about sex dynamics. topping, bottoming... because it almost always happens to same-sex pairings.
I recently found out that ship names used to go by who tops and who bottoms and. if that isn't proof people only care about porn, I don't know what is. "but it's fandom tradition and fandom etiquette to tag properly" I have enough experience to know that some traditions should be left behind. and I thought fandom etiquette was just about being nice to each other... idk. maybe I'm too asexual to understand.
I never really understood why it's that serious. or why that question is always asked to mlm pairings and even wlw. "who tops/bottoms" why is that the first thing you ask about a gay couple? you never do that to straight couples so why them? and I don't understand people who apply those terms in ships that isn't just for smut, and get weirdly serious about it, even aggressive to people who don't like what they like.
I could say the same about traditional types of relationships being put in same-sex relationships- it's a different conversation entirely but it's similar. it's always "who's the one wearing the pants" "who is the wife" but never a gray area. two men can't just be husbands. one of them has to be "the wife". it all boils down to tradition. (this isn't about people who like using these labels to describe their own identity and their own relationships with consenting partners. I can understand that. I'm talking about third parties forcing this kind of stuff)
it's not to say I don't indulge in this too- I'm guilty. I like to think my blorbo bruce wayne is a bottom in bed and I tend to call him wife/girlfriend/feminine terms. I like using those types of wordings for ships I like- I even use stereotypes sometimes. but at the end of the day; it doesn't matter. and not everything is about sex and what these characters/people do in the bedroom.
if this really does affect you, then direct those strong feelings onto serious problems happening in real life that are affecting real people. not just useless fandom/shipping drama. like I'm an intern now, my government's shit, and my people are racist/xenophobic and queerphobic. I genuinely have bigger fish to fry.
anyway my hot take is: top/bottom/switch... sex lingo in general should only apply to, well, sex. smut and porn. and not everyday shipping dynamics, especially when they're gay. I once had someone go "this character is definitely the bottom" to my gay ocs. who are feral cats. why are you sexualizing them... I guarantee if they were straight this wouldn't happen. :'[
