Sergey Bratkov was born in 1960 in Kharkov (Ukraine). In 1978 he graduated from the Repin Art College and Polytechnical Academy in 1983. From 70’s he became interested in photography, in the 80s he began experimenting with the shooting making collages and objects. From 1988 to 1993 he was in a group of artists called “Litera A”: creating semifigurative painting, he participated in group exhibitions in Ukraine and Germany. From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the Fast Reaction Group («Rapid Response Group”) together with the photographer Boris Mikhailov, Viktoria Mikhailova and Sergey Solonsky. They created a provocative campaigns, objects and photo series. In 1993 in his Kharkov studio Bratkov founded the gallery “Apdaun”, it lasted until 1997. Since 2000 he lives and works in Moscow, collaborating with Regina Gallery. He creates photo series (reportage, staging), video, installations and performances. In his works he reflects the social reality of Russia and Ukraine, focusing on the life of homeless, poor and middle-class people. He addresses the society’s problems and fixes the “peoples kitsch – an absurd collage of everyday life, typical of the post-Soviet space” (S. Bratkov). Ivar Wigan documents scenes from underground hip-hop and street culture in the American South. Taken throughout multiple cities—predominately in Miami, Atlanta and New Orleans—the images are a defiant celebration of marginalized culture, suffered with a sense of admiration and empathy. The title of the work dedicated to a term from the community, a ‘God’ is a veteran hustler—someone who has either survived the ‘streets’ and/or the complex maze of America’s prison system. In his latest collection, Dolce Via, photographer Charles H. Traub brings an American aesthetic to the delights of the streets and byways of Italy. This volume is the first comprehensive compendium of his vivid color photographs made in early 1980s Italy, from Milan to Marsala. Characteristic of Traub’s imagery is a candid intimacy that combines humor and spontaneity, which makes us long for an Italy that maybe only once was. Brilliant blues, reds, and yellows engulf the baroque posturing and gestures of strangers and ordinary people who become fond archetypical caricatures. Traub’s friend and guide, the late photographer Luigi Ghirri, said of the imagery, “You see our foibles, strip us bare, make love through the camera, and then venerate us.” These photographs were last exhibited at the Hudson River Museum, Light Gallery New York, and Gallery Agora in Torino in the mid-1980s. Traub has published seven previous volumes of work including Beach (1977), Italy Observed (1988), and Still Life in America (2004). He is represented by the Gitterman Gallery in New York, has exhibited in 27 solo gallery shows, and his works are in the collection of major museums worldwide.
