Oh, we talked about this once, I think. Totsuka tried to convince Mikoto to be all romantic and shit because Reisi’s been working so hard. Now, Reisi’s been working hard because Mikoto wrecked a good third of the commercial sector of Shizume City the other day and well, Scepter 4 has to clean that shit up. So, he’s overworked, cranky, and typically Reisi doesn’t bring their King-level fights home, but Mikoto’s really been trying him lately. 

So, Mikoto sits around in Bar HOMRA and broods. Both Izumo and Totsuka know it’s because his husband isn’t giving him any. Totsuka tells Mikoto that he should plan a romantic evening as a quasi-apology. Izumo even cooks the romantic dinner for them because we all know what will happen if Mikoto cooks. Totsuka tells the Red King to get rose petals and candles and soft music and all that good shit. He even goes to Reisi’s apartment to help set everything up.

Honestly, all Mikoto had to do was light the fucking candles when it’s time for Reisi to come home. It wasn’t supposed to be hard. Totsuka even gave him matches. But Mikoto’s lazy and he thinks he can control his Aura finely enough to light all them at once. It’s a subtle kind of control, right? Reisi would be so proud of him for exercising such fine control over his power.

Um, yeah, turns out Mikoto sucks at control. Who knew? All the candles turn to liquid wax all at once. Some of the wicks were still alight when they hit the floor. So, now there’s wax and scorch marks all over Reisi’s hardwood floor. 

By the time Reisi gets home, Mikoto’s trying to scrape the wax up with a butter knife. 

Reisi looks at the now-cold food, the rose petals stuck to the floor with hot wax, the scorch, and honestly, he finds his walking wrecking ball of a husband so endearing even when the man ruins so much property. He nearly bends over crying it’s such a hilarious scene. I mean, Mikoto will always be Mikoto -- on the level of civil property damage, sure, but also private property damage. 

The sight of Reisi laughing -- like really laughing like a little kid -- makes Mikoto feel like a kid himself. The Kings just sort of keep devolving into a huge fit of giggles. It’s very cute.

He did get curious, sort of, and he also sort of hated himself for it. But they were having dinner, and Mikoto and Reisi were snipping as usual -- playful banter, of course, but not wholly untrue. So, for example, Reisi might talk about how horribly lazy Mikoto is, and how he’s going to murder the fuck out of him if he finds damp towels on the bed again. And Mikoto’s all like, “You’re worse than my mother with all the nagging to clean up my room.” 

And Saru -- who is thoroughly inspecting his pasta to make sure Reisi hasn’t put any of those goddamn veggie noodles in it this time -- blurts out what he’s think, “Why are you together anyway if you’re so damn different. What are you, fuck buddies who needed the dual income?” 

That’s hilarious, of course. and Mikoto’s like, “Nah, if anything, Reisi’s a golddigger and married me for my inheritance.”

“The price outstrips the reward, dearest,” Reisi says, voice dripping with false sweetness. “And it’s not like you do anything to earn your salary. Kusanagi-san is the reason we’re not living in a box.” 

Mikoto can’t really argue with that so he just shrugs. “Still makes you a golddigger, though.” 

But because Saru’s shown any interest in them at all, Reisi tells him how they met. One of Mikoto’s subordinates gets hauled in for business malpractice; he’s being sued for all sorts of shit, most of it made up. This would be poor Totsuka, who is easy to target because he’s so guileless and hapless and kind.

In every AU, Mikoto protects his people. And so, he tells Izumo to find Totsuka the best lawyer in the city -- the one with the highest “wins” in court. That lawyer happens to be Reisi. Reisi’s not a business lawyer, and he spends a lot of time trying to tell Izumo that courtroom wins have nothing to do with whether or not one is a good lawyer, since like 90% of the profession is negotiation, not courtroom drama (don’t tell that Aloft!Hirato, BTW). But Izumo won’t take no for an answer, and he swears they’ll pay him an obscene amount of money. Reisi’s a good lawyer, but criminal lawyers don’t make a huge salary. And he’d really love to get his parents something wonderful for their 40th wedding anniversary this year. So he takes the job. 

They have lots of meetings that don’t involve Mikoto, of course. Just Reisi and Totsuka and Izumo poring over all the details of the case in some or other meeting room in Mikoto’s office building. Reisi and Izumo are pretty efficient, and Totsuka is kind of useless but he makes good coffee. One day, Mikoto forgets what time he’s supposed to show to a board meeting and he hunts Izumo down to ask him (Mikoto does this often). And he sees Reisi and is absolutely staggered by how beautiful he is. Lust at first sight. 

Mikoto makes it a point to show up at the next few meetings. When asked why he’s taken a sudden interest, he says that he wants to make sure he’s getting what he’s paying for -- an insult if ever there was one. 

Reisi pushes up his glasses. “You were the one who called me. It would behoove you to remember that.”

“Behoove, huh? Sure talk like a lawyer.”

“Oh? You don’t talk like a CEO, though. In fact, you don’t command an iota of professionalism or poise. You’ve done nothing but disrupt and distract the meetings you pay me $500 an hour to conduct.”

Mikoto laughs. “I distract you, hmmm?”

And Izumo, who is really done with this shit, writes down Reisi’s number on a piece of paper and says, “You can call and detail all your grievances off the clock. Mikoto has a board meeting in five minutes and we have work to do while he puts on his big boy pants and does some work instead of flirting all afternoon.” 

Now, you can predict the rest, because you all know Reisi would call just to complain to Mikoto about Mikoto. And Mikoto would just snipe back and ask Reisi to be a man about it and come tell him to his face. So Reisi does -- and he doesn’t make it one foot through the threshold before he’s slammed against the wall and fucked out of his mind. 

Reisi leaves that getting fucked out of his mind part out of the story he tells Saru, though. He’s like, “Once I called him, it was clear that we were interested in one another, and the rest is history.

And Mikoto snorts. “Interested? Is that what you call it when your clothes were on my floor the second we were alone?”

Reisi’s eyeswiden, their bright lilac darkening into a deep purple. A cast of mischief passesover his face as his mind conjures the most salacious images. Mikoto, bound,head down and ass up on their bed, a chain attached to his wrists and a spreader bar at his ankles.Mikoto, pressed face-first into the door of his office at Tsubaki-mon, his fingerscurling deeper into the fine wood with every slap of the whip. Mikoto, underneath him,writhing and panting around the gag in his mouth, his fervent pleas for releasemuffled but understood all the same.

“What are youthinkin’ ‘bout?” the Red King asks, his own gaze drawn to the item displayedbefore them.

Reisi clears histhroat and affects some level of control over his tone. He cannot, however,hide the wash of blush settling high on his cheeks. “Nothing,” he says. “Onlythat we ought to disguise ourselves before we leave this place.”

“This place, huh?”Mikoto teases. “You’re being pretty evasive there. You mean this sex shop?What, afraid your little minions are gonna see us?”

“Well,” the BlueKing begins. “Part of my position as head of SCEPTER 4 entails maintaining animpeccable public persona. I can’t very well have my subordinates imagine me tobe a—” and here he stops, at a loss for words.

“A what?”

“….”

Mikoto laughs,rich and vibrant. It’s the kind of laugh that makes Reisi want to buy out thewhole damn store and then fly them back to his apartment without regard for theoveruse of Kings’ powers. “You don’t want them to know you got a million kinks,every one of ‘em more dangerous than the last one, right?”

The words are alow growl against the shell of the brunet’s ear. He shivers. The flush on hisskin grows hot, making his collar feel suddenly too tight. He tries, andfails, to corral his freewheeling thoughts. “Something like that,” he murmurs,eyes still affixed to the luxury riding crop he’s been ogling for a good twentyminutes.

As though he canread his partner’s mind, Mikoto snatches up the crop and digs his wallet out ofhis back pocket. Reisi makes to protest. It was, after all, exceedinglyexpensive. A cheaper model would suffice, no doubt.

And it’s even better when I realize that this is Reisi and Mikoto *just* starting to get a feel of each other. Mikoto barely knows of him, and Reisi already pulled this reaction out of him. Mikoto has rushed feelings of something new, something exciting! From this one man, from this King. It’s like they’re each other’s magnets in some ways

Ah, then I have to thank you, because I really, really do think about it when I need a pick-me-up, because, honestly, there’s nothing more delightful to think about than surly teen Saru playing videogames with his dad Mikoto and rolling his eyes but still playing along at Jeopardy with his dad Reisi. I love that AU. Thanks for gifting it to us. 

And yeah, Mikorei teaming up to kill Niki seems like some bonding. I bet even in that delightful adoption AU, the two would get together and devastate Niki if they found out. And let’s say they did. Say they learned what happened to Saru -- that he had a father, Niki, who treated him like Niki does in canon. Maybe he was put into the system because of the abuse. And he was young, so maybe he’d repressed the memories. But Reisi has him in therapy and has had him in therapy since they adopted him at the young age we talked about -- like five-ish right?

So, Saru’s been in therapy all this time, and he’s very hesitant about therapy for a long time. But his therapist is a very, very patient person -- let’s call him Miwa Ichigen. And so after years of going to therapy, Saru starts opening up about Niki. 

He doesn’t open up to his dads, though. That said, Reisi is very shrewd and Mikoto has seen the effects of trauma in his niece (Anna), so he knows that Saru’s nightmares and his fear of fire and his desire to double, triple, quadruple check that Mikoto and Reisi are in bed asleep suggests trauma. Like, there are things Saru does that are dead giveaways: texting Reisi whenever he’s away because he’s afraid he won’t come back; refusing to unpack his suitcase because he thinks he’ll be sent back; refusing to decorate his room for years because he’s afraid he’ll be sent back; nightmares; flinching whenever either dad makes a sudden movement towards him; etc. And Mikoto and Reisi aren’t dumb. They get it. 

It’s only when he’s well into high school that Saru begins telling his dads about it. He tells Reisi first because he thinks Reisi is the one who won’t go on a murderous rampage. Reisi doesn’t tell Mikoto because he doesn’t want to betray his son’s confidence. But he seethes, like truly seethes in the interim and he totally finds this fucker like they do in Big Little Lies. Does all the research and everything. Learns the man’s got charges for sexual assault of a minor -- the minor settled because they didn’t want to expose themselves in court. And Reisi’s blood runs cold. He’s going to kill this fucker and no one will ever find the body. But he’s going to wait until Mikoto learns everything first. But he keeps researching and he keeps learning more and more things that make it clear that Fushimi Niki is a terrible person who isn’t rotting on Death Row because his wife knows how to pay off the right people. Reisi acts normal around Saru, though; he doesn’t want the boy to think that telling him caused any extra stress. 

Saru eventually confides in Mikoto. Mikoto doesn’t have Reisi’s cool, so he basically drops Saru off wherever the boy was headed -- library, likely. He whips the car around, drives straight to Reisi’s office and barges through the door. 

Reisi’s all like, “Shut the door.” He says nothing else, but that clipped tone is enough for Mikoto to realize that Reisi knows and Reisi has a plan. And that calms him.

And soon afterwards, Fushimi Niki, husband to Forbes 100 CEO Fushimi Kisa is declared missing. Kisa claims he’s probably off getting drugged and fucked out of his mind. But he never returns. 

Yeah I think that’s about it. I think Seri confirmed why she was so worried about the whole “this is TOO perfect” thing when she went to talk with Kusanagi- not gonna lie I also loved when Yata went to comment on the dream to Saru too

Okay, but this gives us so many wonderful things about these characters. Seri’s wish was for her Captain to have his power back. That’s some devotion right there. Like, she doesn’t want to lose him, sure, but she also doesn’t want him to lose the means to realize his dream of a beautiful, orderly world. 

Ahhhhh, you guys.... stop it, you’ll make me blush. Seriously. I really am thankful, though, for every message because like I said, it means that something I made gave some benefit to someone. That’s a good feeling and I try to remember it on bad days. 

Yeahhh even though I hate it for him, I just know that he wouldn’t let himself mourn. I also believe his workload killed two birds with one stone for him. Objectively, he was very productive and helped get a lot of stuff done. On the other hand, it’s a wonderful distraction from his personal distress. Suoh calling him out on that made it even more interesting in ROK. If anything I think seeing Suoh was the best thing for Reisi (maybe Suoh knew that too?) It’s probably his way of closure

Yeah, I think so too. Reisi’s deterioration in ROK is really fascinating, yes? True, he’s pulling a Suoh Mikoto, but we almost forgive him for it because he claims it’s his duty to stop Hisui Nagare from releasing the Slates. But when he has that second, final fight with Iwa-san, he doesn’t say, “I’m fighting you out of duty.” Rather, he says, “I don’t like you.” I think that was a great deal of growth on Reisi’s part. Iwa-san basically calls him a naive kid the night he beats the shit out of him, and let’s be real, Iwa-san is right. Those ideals of Reisi’s are admirable, yes, but they also make him inflexible. Suoh knew this. It’s the subject of the very first fight that they had -- the one in the park on that hot summer day. But towards the end of ROK, Reisi isn’t acting as head of SCEPTER 4. He’s doing what he, Munakata Reisi, wishes to do. And it’s him, Munakata Reisi, that his Clansmen come to help at the very end. 

Hearing Suoh say, “That’s not like you, Munakata,” and watching Reisi agree was wonderful because it showed us just how much he’d grown, and just how much he’d come to understand Suoh in death.
