In the beginning, they stood at attention. It was only befitting of their task. They would stand as the load bearing pillar of Hallownest, straight and tall. The stasis would see that they never tired, surely.
Then, parade rest. The Pure Vessel did not feel aches in their legs and back. They did not succumb to petty discomforts.
They did not slouch.
The Pure Vessel did not resort to counting the five hundred twenty eight notches in the stone work to pass the time.
Of course, time was not passing. That was the point of the spellwork. To protect Hallownest eternal, so no force would destroy this kingdom.
The Pure Vessel did not sleep. They had rested, and rested often, before taking up their sacred task. But sleep was a state of being that eluded them. The Five Great Knights had all slept, although not all at once. The Pale King always had at least one at his side at all hours, even and especially when he retired to his own quarters.
So it was not sleep that the Pure Vessel courted by resting their eyes for the briefest moments. It was simply a moment of rest.
In that moment of rest, they saw the White Palace.
Of course. The gift. In the midst of the ritual itself the Pure Vessel had almost forgotten. Forgetting was simplicity itself when the core of their being was void, hollow and without mind.
