âJason is alive, Vlad. Your son is alive.â
âWhat the fuck?â both Jason and Dick said at the same time. What did the kid mean that Jason was Vlad Mastersâ son? Jasonâs father was a low-life henchman named Willis Todd. Jason needed to know what was going on, so he tuned back in, feeling numb. In the corner of his eye, Jason saw Dick pacing. Jason ignored his older brother.
âYeah, Vlad, Iâm sure. Wayne said something about him being caught up in a terrorist attack and amnesia?â
Even in his numb state, Jason could tell that Danny didnât believe the story. Sure, they werenât telling the public the whole truth, but it was still a good story. They even planted fake evidence for when people started looking.
âHeâs not like us.â Huh? What did he mean that Jason wasnât like them? âHe triggered something similar to my ghost sense, but not enough for my icy breath to be triggered. Heâs died, though, that much I can confirm.â
Jason felt a chill go down his spine at the kidâs sure tone. He knew Jason had died somehow.
âWhat does that even mean? How can he be so sure?â Dick asked out loud.
âShh,â Jason shushed; he wanted to hear more.
âOh, heâs big, alright,â Danny muttered. Dammit, what was with the non sequitur? Jason wished he could hear what Masters was saying, too.
âWhat? No! Iâm not that stupid.â Danny said.
And right at that moment, Bruce decided to appear. Jason would bet that the controlling ass still had on the earpiece and heard everything Jason did. Hell, he bet his whole family was listening in.
âJay ladâ,â
âShh, listening.â
Bruce frowned but actually listened to Jason for once and kept his mouth shut.
âWhat are you going to do, now?â
What indeed? Better yet, what was Jason going to do with this information?
âWait, Vlad!â
Ugh, Jason hated not knowing what Masters was saying. He didnât understand what Danny said in his side of the conversation and only got a fraction of the picture. Judging by Dickâs and Bruceâs frown, they didnât like it either.
Must be a bat thing.
âIâm not saying you donât deserve to see him! Iâm just saying that this situation is delicate. Who knows how heâll react to a mysterious man claiming to be his father? Especially since you said you suspect Sheila had something to do with his death.â
Jason froze. Howâhow could this stranger possibly know that Sheila fucking Haywood was the reason for his death? He hadnât even told his family. They still assumed it was his own reckless fault for getting killed.
Bruce sucked in a deep breath and looked at Jasonâs still form. Dick stopped pacing.
âJason, whatâwhat does he mean?â
Jason ignored his brother. He wasnât in the mood.
âExactly. Heâs probably already been betrayed by one biological parent. Whoâs to say he wonât be wary of a man claiming to be his bio dad? Think this through, Vlad.â
âJason, didâdid something happen with Sheila Haywood? What arenât you telling us?â
Jason continued ignoring Dick, and the man dropped it at least, for the moment.
Jason felt unnerved by how much this kid knew about him. He didnât explicitly say Sheila betrayed him, but he knew enough about her to suspect it was a possibility. Someone must have told him about her. That someone could be Vlad Masters, a man who claims to be Jasonâs biological father.Â
âJason, we need to talk about this; figure things out,â Bruce muttered while pulling out his phone. He started texting, and Jason could only assume it was Barbara. She could get to the bottom of this.
âNo, of course not! Iâm saying we need to come up with a plan so he doesnât freak out. You havenât met him; he has a bit of a temper.â
Dick, the ass, snorted.
âUnderstatement,â he mumbled. Jason gave him the bird. The asshole had the audacity to smirk at him before pacing again.
âOkay,â Danny said. What else could he do? âIâll meet you at the hotel.â
Great, great. This was great. Vlad Masters was coming to Gotham. That meant Jason had the opportunity to confront the man and find out what the fuck was going on. He had so many questions; questions, it seemed, that only Masters could answer.
Jasonâs mind was going around in circles, trying to make sense of what he had heard.
How was Willis not his dad? The man had always been a part of Jasonâs life. He remembered seeing his father come in and out of the house with bruises, trying to scrape together enough money for food and rent, trying to make ends meet so his mom, Catherine, could afford her medicine.
Which brought up another question.
How did Jason end up with two people who werenât even his biological parents? He had a birth certificate, dammit! Yeah, it was old and faded, but it clearly stated that Willis Todd was his father.
But what if he wasnât? What if Jasonâs father were a shady billionaire who seemed to have accumulated his wealth through dubious means? God, what did it mean? Who was Jason Todd?
No, he might not even be Jason Todd. He didnât know who he was!
Jason didnât realize he was hyperventilating until a strong hand touched his shoulder. He looked up and saw his father's clear blue eyesâthe father he chose. Yeah, he and Bruce have had disagreementsâGod, have they had manyâbut at the end of the day, he knew the older man would always be there for him.
âItâs okay, Jay lad, weâll figure this out, I promise.â
For the first time in a long time, Jason let Bruceâs words comfort him. He fell into his dadâs arms and let the man hug him. Yes, they would figure it out, and if Vlad Masters even thought about making his life difficult, well, they were the Batfamily. Nothing could stop them when they worked together.
They stayed in the hallway for a while, absorbing everything they had just heard. Danny had stopped talking. The only thing they heard was the rustling of fabric and distant traffic sounds. It didnât seem they would get more information that night.
Still, they were paranoid bastards with a thirst for knowledge, so they kept the earpieces in just in case any new relevant information came up.
âWe should head back to the gala,â Dick said, âWeâve been away for too long, and I doubt even Tim can excuse our absence for this much time.â
Jason didnât want to go back. He was still freaking out. He knew if he went back, heâd have to pretend to put up with the pompous elite of Gotham and smile as they tried to pry into his life. He didnât know how much control he had after what he had just learned.
âJay lad, if you donât want to go back, you donât have to. I can do damage control.â
Jason frowned. Bruce was giving him an out; he should take it. But, a part of him couldnât help but wonder if Bruce was doing it because he didnât trust Jason and his temper or if he was doing it for Jasonâs sake.
âNah, itâs my gala. Iâll go. Besides, if I donât distract myself, I might go crazy with this new info.â
âWhatever you want, Jason, weâll support.â
âThanks.â Jason turned and walked back to the gala. The rustle of fabric still echoed in his ears.
