Well, it’s been quite a week. A snowstorm, rainstorm, gale force winds, -35c temperatures with wind chills and a day that was a barmy 8c! The whippets and I think -35c is a ridiculous temperature and are glad it doesn’t get that low too often. We didn’t move far from our wood stove apart from to go and bring in more wood. Michael definitely chose a good week to be in San Diego. The photo above, by the way, is from my Hadrian’s Wall Walk last year. Warmer times for sure!Â
On to my training. This is how week 10 went:
Monday – A nice and easy 9.66 km which I did on the treadmill in the garage. The temperature was -15c in there but that was 20c higher than it was outside, so a wise decision.
Tuesday – Day Off Bowling League Day, more of this later1
Wednesday – Speed day and it was a Fartlek Ladder again this week. Same plan as last week and this time I managed to get up to 14.7kph for the last 200’s. So this is what I did, 2x 200’s (14.5kph), 1 x 400 (13.3kph), 1 x 800 (12.4kph), 1 x 1600 (12.2kph), 1 x 800 (12.4kph), 1 x 400 (13.3kph), 2 x 200’s (14.7kph). By the time I reached the mile repeat I felt like I was walking it at 12.2kph until I got about half way through it and then I started to feel a bit tired.
Thursday – Day Off so I did some strength training. My coach, Alex, had sent me some strength training exercises to do a couple of times a week so I did the first set today. Oh my, made me realize how my core has gone a tad week and needs to improve.
Friday – Ran a nice and easy 9.81 km with Michael, who was complaining about the cold, having just returned from San Diego. I was thinking it was fairly warm today, -6c, but the wind was very strong and chilly. We drove half way down King William Road to start the run. Then ran to the junction with Lorneville Road which included the long incline near the end of KW. We then turned up into Lorneville and ran up the very steep hill at the bottom of Lorneville Road, turned around and ran back to the truck. I wanted to get a few hills in as the new Tallahassee route is very hilly.
Saturday – Day Off so I did my second set of strength training.
Sunday – Nice and easy long run with Cindy. We ran another 19.3 km. Setting off from the Lorneville Store we ran towards Manawagonish Road and continued towards Simms Corner until we reached Ready Street and then turned around and came all the way back. It started off as a very good day for a long run, -8c, sunny and not too strong a wind. This changed soon after we started back when a very strong gale force wind suddenly whipped up, just in time to be against us going up a long tough hill and most of the rest of the way back to the store. It felt like we were going backwards at one stage and we probably were. To quote Cindy, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” To quote me, “Just think how fit I am making you by letting you accompany me on my long runs. What an awesome friend I am.”
My non-running highlight of the week was definitely getting back to the bowling league on Tuesday night. I had missed 2 weeks of bowling, so it was great to get back into it. I was a bit worried that I would have forgotten how to bowl but I got my highest score ever in the first game of 126!!! Unfortunately I suffered jet lag from those dizzying heights and scored 87 and then 82 after that. Our captain Brian, played very well in the last game to pull us through. Definitely a captain’s performance. We managed to win two of the 3 games and knocked the most pins down and so scored 6 points.
