These two melt my heart. 

(This is a rant.)

So it’s been weeks now since I finished watching Victoria’s series 2, and I’ve cycled through the stages of grief—-denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance—-only to find myself regressing back to denial before I can reach the final stage. (Hence, my blog title–”Drumfred Denial”–because I’m sure I needed to hit you over the head with that.) I wish I had just stopped watching after the elation of “The King Over the Water.”

Who am I kidding? That’s not true. I just wish Daisy Goodwin hadn’t cut us off at the knees, as we were still flushed and swooning in the wake of their long-awaited, sweet-yet-sexy kiss.

I have no problem with bending facts to explore larger truths or make emotional resonances with contemporary society. Yay for that, since there’s no Drumfred without it. At the same time, because these are historical figures who really lived (yeah, I get that), at some point in the not-too-distant future, Drummond would have to die. It sucks, but there it is.

But so much was already altered for the character: they cut his age roughly in half, IRL he was dead well before the Corn Laws were repealed, he wouldn’t have been hanging around the palace at the same time as Lord Alfred Paget, etc. And I suppose I’m grateful that, as the actors have said in interviews, he actually lasted longer than originally intended. But damn!!! We know she saw the chemistry there. Did she have no sense of the dramatic possibilities in depicting at least a BIT of Drumfred conducting an ongoing covert relationship? Pathos Gold, I’m telling you. And it would have provided a deeper exploration of what it meant to be gay before that even existed as a concept. Had they gone a little farther down that road, she could’ve given the fans a compelling storyline as well as more of what we crave: more Drumfred, 💕 complete with sexy velvet voices and those smoldering glances. And more kissing, please.

I guess she wanted to keep his death connected to Peel’s tenure, which ended with the Corn Laws repeal, but couldn’t she have stretched that historical fact, since she’d already played around with so much else anyway? Have their affair continue through most of Series 3, and THEN kill him off if you must. But how much does it suck to get that magnificent kiss, and in the very next episode Drummond is dead?! (Except that of course, he’s not. Really, he’s not.)
