Yesterday I decided to celebrate ten years of HEMA by training ten different systems, roughly in the order in which I learnt them. If only I could say I spent a year on each one. It finally stopped raining when I finished recording.

A shot from last Sunday’s @gwaithimegyr practice session in #bandung . It’s not often that we get to capture two different levels of drills in the same frame — from the bare basics for a beginner in the foreground to somewhat more advanced beginner stuff in the background. #hema #historicaleuropeanmartialarts #historicalfencing #longsword #longswordfencing #medievalfencing #sword #swords #swordfighting #gwaithimegyr #gwaithimegyrbandung #hemaindonesia #indonesia #martialarts (at BALKOT ( Balai Kota ) Bandung) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2PCLy-n2ao/?igshid=1gj5q2ogkq99c
“"It is a great mistake to suppose that women cannot learn fencing as quickly as men…the fact is the women are much the quicker pupils. They are more flexible of body; their limbs are more supple and elastic—that’s one advantage. Their mental brightness enables them to pick up the strategy of the art quicker—that’s a second advantage. And, thirdly, they have more nerve—it’s a fact; I don’t know why, but it’s a fact.”
This is a quote from Thomas Hoyer Monstery, a 19th century swordsman with a ridiculous combat record, who trained arguably one of the greatest swordfighters of her age, Ella Hattan.
He knew his shit.
EDIT: Ella Hattan was not the greatest "female swordfighter” of her age, she was just one of the best, period. In fact she ran out of opponents because men were afraid they would lose to a woman and refused to fight because they couldn’t handle it.“ Jon Mills

Good times sparring at wsg this morning and filming for Astolat 2017 rulesets. Congrats to Smashas and James for their successes at Red Dragon Tourney longsword open today as well.
I forgot my mask but managed to get some fencing in all the same at waterloosparring.com this morning.

This mornings funsies. I did: smallsword, sword and buckler, longsword and case or swords.
A busy and energetic session at #waterloosparring this morning.
I’ve passed the last two days with my friend Federico Dall’Olio, which is an awesome fencer! We passed two beautiful days together talking about fencing and many other things! And of course we had a lot of fencing! We had sparring by playing around with different rule sets, and Fede helped me working on my measure management and awareness with a beautiful frontal lesson. Two beautiful and interesting days! @dallolio_federico #historicaleuropeanmartialarts #longsword #swordfighting #fencing #longswordfencing #swordsmen #hema #hemafencing #swords https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb2wUk8tjZ5/?utm_medium=tumblr
