a kiss to make the other believe professed feelings - Lomford
"I'm getting married, Dani. In three days! You can't..." Matt ran a hand through his golden curls his lack of words came from every emotion in the book. Her confession of love for him came as a surprise to them both. No, it was more a kick in the gut as it left him breathless. Left him sick and confused.
"I wasn't planning on doing this, okay?" Her hands were shaking and that was only the tip of the iceberg to everything going on inside her. "But I... I couldn't just let you marry her without telling you. I couldn't live with the what if."
"Why? Why now?" He shook his head, not waiting for an answer as he continued. "You had so many times you could have... Do you know how long I..." He cut himself off. This couldn't be happening. For years he had waited for her. He had longed for her. Loved her in ways that felt so much deeper than she could understand and there was nothing. He had accepted that. Moved on. Found the perfect girl that loved him unconditionally.
"Because I wasn't ready for you, Matty!" Her raised voice wasn't from anger but desperation. She could barely understand her own feelings so how could she express it to him? "Yes, I was dating and moving on but I couldn't move on to you because that would just be it. There wouldn't need to be anyone else. There wouldn't be anyone else. And I knew that and after Luke I wasn't ready. You couldn't be the guy I moved on with because that scared the shit out of me. It would mean too much before I was ready let it. If we ever had a chance it couldn't be then."
It wasn't that her words were lost on him. He understood what she was telling him but the fact that she clearly had feelings for him way before these past few months was hard to hear. Hard to know that if he had just waited a little longer that maybe those years of loving her in secret really would have been the building of a future. But now she wasn't supposed to be his future. Jules was.
Dani could see every thought going through his head. He wasn't saying anything and it was eating at her. The silence pushing her to continue. "And maybe we don't have a chance now," she admitted with a shrug though fear lit her blue eyes. "Maybe I am too late, but I have to know. I have to know if I am," she swallowed hard as they looked at each other, both unprepared for the question they knew was next. "Am I? Am I too late?"
Yes. Yes, she was too late. It was what he should have said without a second thought. Jules was the perfect girl but Dani was the girl of his dreams. The guilt of loving them both made an answer impossible. "Dani..." He tried with no words to follow only for Dani to cure the silence as in one quick push on her feet she crashed her lips into his.
It was like a fire igniting, the weight of her kiss hitting him like a ton of bricks only for him to wake up and start kissing her back. It was passion for a desire that had lingered so long. It was sadness for all the heartbreak and waiting of this moment. It was love. A love of every night they found comfort of their loss in each other. For every beer shared that left them with careless laughter. Every barefoot dance that they stole with one another. It was years of a friendship that only needed the perfect timing that never came that they were now stealing in this moment.
Her hands were on his cheeks, his were wrapped around her tightly. Their lips somehow working together and battling at the same time. The love was overwhelming and not enough. It was healing and yet both hearts ached for each other. They were kissing like it was the final kiss but Dani could only pray that it wasn't. That she hadn't lost him. That she wouldn't lose this love that had fought through time and grief to be ready for him.
