Okay, I swear I’m not a paid shill for this game or anything. I really do just like it that much.
BASICALLY. This is a game that is essentially just very low-level programming. You have some input, a string like “ABCDEF”; you send the input through a sequence of little boxes that can perform manipulations on it, e.g. deleting the first letter or taking the letter at the front and moving it to the back, or send the input in different directions depending on some condition; and the objective is to ultimately return the right output for any input thrown at it (for example, the level might ask you to duplicate each letter, so that e.g. “ABCDEF” becomes “AABBCCDDEEFF”).
(If you read my LiveJournal in 2006 or so, you may remember when I had a dream about a DS game called Purple Algorithm. By some delightful coincidence, this is basically that. But better.)
It starts easy as it introduces basic concepts, but once it gets to the more challenging levels, it is possibly the most viscerally satisfying puzzle game I have ever played. Finally untangling the last logic knot and placing the boxes just right and seeing the tests finally pass perfectly makes me feel awesome. Not in the “feels good” sense, the “I CAN’T BELIEVE I DID THIS, I AM GOD” sense.
It’s prooooobably not for everyone. If your mind is as delighted by the problem-solving aspect of programming as mine is, this is pretty much the best game ever. If not, it may just be frustratingly incomprehensible. But try it just in case.
The first ten levels are free, but right now the full game is on sale for ten dollars, so grab it while you can if it sweeps you off your feet the way it did me. (This is LogicBox 2.0, by the way; the original was a Flash game and had about 20 levels in it. If you want more without having to pay, you can check that out. It had some user experience issues, especially that in the later levels the tests take ages to run, but it was great fun nonetheless.)
(I may have been doing this yesterday instead of writing.)
