I just saw a post that made me think of this. I respect the ‘we can disagree’/’we don’t need to have all the same opinions’ when it comes to relationships. Because, of course, it’s nigh impossible to find someone that 100% has the same views on things as you- Not to mention how people change over time.
However, those sentiments also have limits. I’m a queer leftist with experience dating from both the leftist and moderate pools. And, let me tell you right now, dating a moderate was fucking awful.
Were there good times? Sure. But any time something serious came up- even things concerning human rights- it was a shit show. It really made me realize that if you’re not siding with progression, or at the very least leaning that way, you’re complacent and only another number for right-wing conservatives taking away my safety.
I’d get sent transphobic memes because this one person in particular had good intentions thinking it would make me laugh because I’m queer and this meme is about queer people, right? But even once explaining that these memes were transphobic and not actually funny, I was met with ‘it’s just a joke’ or ‘I forgot I can’t make certain jokes with you’. I should also add that I’m an American, and these experiences really solidified that even our Center is still Right.
I’m personally going to stick to dating other leftists from now on to avoid those shit shows. I want to be able to have actual discussions rather than argue whether or not I ‘deserve’ to have rights. I’m not even old, and I’m already tired of this bullshit.
