Altarpiece of the Patron Saints of Cologne by Stephan Lochner (1440s) described in Darkmans by Nicola Barker.
âLochner is best known for his Adoration of the Magi which takes pride of place in the cathedral in Cologne . . .â
She turned the pages of the book until she reached a fine, colour reproduction of the painting in question, surrounded by a plethora of comments and observations written in a dark, blue ink.
âCome and look.â
Kane strolled over. It was a beautiful painting; a triptych. In the middle panel three wise men made offerings to the baby Christ.
âThis is Saint Gereon,â she pointed to one of the side panels, âand this is Saint Ursula . . .â she pointed to the other. âTheyâve augmented the Adoration with them because the two saints have a special relevance to Cologne. They were both martyred there.â
âDo you like it?â Kane wondered, detecting an element of fastidiousness in her tone.
âBut of course,â she exclaimed, âitâs magnificent, donât you think? Finely observed, meticulously finished. A masterpiece of its time - of any time - although not, Iâll admit, what you might call the worldâs most âemotionally involvingâ work of art.â

though this shows the adoration of the child by his mother, rather than by the Magi.

Although Justice Douglas wrote that âracism as a constitutional principle was emphatically rejectedâ in Yick Wo, he noted that on May 15, 1893, the Supreme Court provided a dark day for resident aliens. However, in discussing the case, Justice Douglas focused on Justice David J. Brewer, a conservative justice, who became a champion of individual rights.
