Group Portrait Practice
Today we practiced doing group portrait shots, using fill flash, bounced flash and one using my D.I.Y light modifier.
Above is an image which I took using fill flash.
Above is a photograph which I took using my D.I.Y light modifier.
The only one I didn't complete today was the bounced flash as there was not enough people in our group to hold the reflector up, and we also ran out of time.
Dusk Till Dawn
Location 1 Recce
I have planned to do my first location shoot in an alley on sauchihall Street, behind a venue I always go to.
I like this location for the shoot as it is quiet, and has a very interesting grungey look which is perfect as I will be shooting a band.
For this shoot I will need to borrow a Canon 550d and a speed light.

Adobe Spark for location lighting task.

Location-Group Photo Evaluations
Group Photos
1. What was the project theme and what did you think of it? I enjoyed when I had an actual group together. I had some difficulties outside of college regarding getting people to actually make time to take part, so I used some of my classmates for the group photos instead.
ย 2. What part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting (making the photographs? Optimising images? printing?) I enjoyed using the DIY modifiers the most, I was rather sceptical about them working well, so to see they actually did a good job, especially one that I had made, was fun to see!
3. What new techniques have you experienced? I learned that most home objects can become a modifier/diffuser, I also learned about being more assertive to get my group to pose the way I wanted them, so it looked nicer and planned out better.
4. What technique would you like to develop further? I would enjoy taking the speed light out more and practicing with is.
5. Which photographers did you research throughout this project? I used Pinterest as my main source for looking up ideas and group photos and how they were positioned and posed, the lighting and the equipment.
6. How have they influenced your photographs? It helped me to get a clearer understanding of what was expected of me and how to obtain my goal.
7. Which technique did you enjoy the most? I enjoyed the DIY modifiers the most.
8. What do you feel is the most successful part of your project and why? I feel the most successful part is my positioning of my models.
9. Did you encounter any problems in your project? I did, one member of my group was constantly giggling, laughing and not taking things too seriously. Often I had to remind her to stay still and to focus so I could get photos for my project, I found it rather difficult to work with.
10. How did you learn from them and how did they affect your final images? I learned to keep on trying to have everyone focus and I took numerous shots, to make sure I had a few to pick from.
11. What would you do differently given the chance to complete the projectย again? I would probably avoid working with someone who doesnโt take anyone elseโs work as seriously as their own.
Group Portraits on Location Evaluation
As part of the project Group Portraits I was inspired by Charles Rennie MacIntosh and chose three of his works locations to shoot
House for an Art Lover
The Willow Tea Rooms
The Lighthouse
I was interested to bring together the Scottish theme close to my heart while creating interesting settings I did some analyses and research. The three locations were to be set up and use fill in flash, bounce flash and diffused flash with a home-made diffuser. I had used clingfilm. The most enjoyable part was the research and planning of the locations although these never turned out to be the set locations in the end as we ran short of time with the ongoing pandemic. I enjoyed working in the set group within college out on location and gained some good shots from this. The new technique of using camera speed lights is something I would like to take further into folio 3. I found gathering the people together was a little tricky at first and ensuring they stood were I had asked in order to emulate my chosen images. The workshops in class helped me learn the use of the equiment hands on and being in groups with others was a very good resource too learning from each other. I had a couple of technical issues with the shanny equipment but if I was to redo the project brief I would ensure I get an organised group and able to go out on location in order to shoot my three set chosen locations around Glasgow.
Dusk until Dawn Evaluation
The project theme was Dusk Until Dawn. Out on location we had to shoot a portrait of someone with the settings of either Dawn or Dusk. I knew the project would be a challenge using the various equipment but I was prepared to get out my comfort zone and learn about lighting outdoors in paticular flash. The most enjoyable part was using speed light and ambient lighting within the class groups with the tasks we were presented with and images to emulate. A new technique I learnt on the project was using off camera flash and a shanny connecting the speed light to the camera wireless. I would also look to take this technique futher in the future. I would like to use different locations in a more creative way and experiment in low light conditions. As part of my own research I looked at workshops online of shooting out on location at night time and examples of work. I was unable to attend the one night class we had in January due to work commitments. It became difficult to shoot outside of college timeand ensure I had all the nessisery quipment needed. This would be the only issues I came across as part of the project. I did manage to get a few shots to I could work with and use for Dusk Until Dawn brief. If I had the chance to re do the brief project I would be more adventurous with the theme and ensure an interesting backdrop setting for my subject.
