Shooting in a different location than a studio means having to deal with various and unpredictable lighting conditions. Such conditions on locations involve the presence of the ambient light (environment light), apart from additional artificial lights. The intensity and amount of light have to be measured with the aid of a meter reading, to take a photograph with a correct exposure. There are two different methods of measuring, 'reflective reading' and 'incident reading'. Which one of the two ways provides a more accurate reading of the scene's lighting conditions? Which one between two methods works at best? Well, it depends on the circumstance.

Reflective readings: measure the amount/intensity of the light reflecting off the subject then bouncing back to the meter reading, and are usually taken from the camera's position. These readings are for that affected by the subjects' surfaces reflectance, by the subject's brightness or tonality. In fact, subjects' surfaces of different colours reflect different amounts of light. Whenever the scene presents more than a subject, reflective readings taken from the camera's position would measure the average reflectance of all the subjects. In other words, a reflective reading would most likely assume that all the items are of the same tone (grey) and won't necessarily measure the correct amount of light. This method could provide information that once applied to a photograph, might result in the overexposing or underexposing of some subjects.

Incident readings: measure the amount/intensity of the light falling on the subject and are usually taken from the subject's position pointing into the direction of the light sources. These readings are for that not affected by the subject's brightness or tonality, and by this reason, they provide more accurate measurements of the amount of light. Whenever the photographer sets the ISO, incident readings give the respective combinations of the aperture and shutter speed.

I had a recent assignment to photograph ultimate Frisbee Player Tulsa Douglas.  As with most of my magazine assignments the only info I was given was her name, contact info and why they are doing a story on her.  The rest is up to me to figure out.   I knew I wanted photograph her at dusk throwing and catching.  First challenge was the location, I knew I needed at large open space to shoot.  The second challenge was the lighting.  I knew the lighting on this shoot would be a mixture of strobe and ambient light. 

For strobes I used 2 Dynalite Bajas.  These are 400watt seconds self contained strobes. On the main light, I used a Dynaite Beauty Dish.  For a light modifier on the other Baja I used a Chimera strip light and a grid, to create rim light.   To determine my exposure I set my Nikon D810 on manual and using the in camera meter I take a meter reading off the sky and underexpose one stop to get deeper color.  Using my Sekonic light meter, I set my strobes to give me the same f stop as the reading off the sky.  As the ambient light drops, I slow my shutter to keep my exposure the same.  Tulsa would be silhouetted, without strobes.
