Slow Club | Complete Surrender
by Mel Reeve
Itâs evidently been in the works for a while, but at last Slow Club have given their next album a release date â and it seems theyâre really going for a big build up as weâre not going to get to hear it in full until mid-July. Personally Iâm not a big fan of bands releasing singles that early, because if itâs a good song then Iâm only going to play it death and unfortunately (for me at least) Complete Surrender is a very good song indeed.
Weâve already been treated to a taste of how theyâre sounding now, almost 3 years since their last release, with Tears Of Joy and a cover of Future Islandâs Seasons (Waiting On You). Both these songs â and Complete Surrender - very firmly state that this is not the same band we heard on their first album. Thereâs nothing cute or cheery here; itâs a dark, fast-paced, sensuous piece with a fantastically dramatic string section which helps it to build and rise before falling into the breathy, frantic hook; âcanât happen, canât happen.â Rebecca Taylor has always had a phenomenal voice and itâs used to full effect here. The beat is just as strong and atmospheric as the strings, and itâs nice to hear a single you can actually imagine yourself dancing to. If this is an accurate representation of the rest of the album then Iâm almost certainly going to be able to forgive the long wait.
