When night fell, Kaina slipped out of her room. With careful glances up and down the hallway, she stalked towards little Hawks’ room. He usually shared it with another boy, but due to his recent injuries, Hawks’ roommate had been moved for the last two nights. Good enough for her. She had a plan and without any witness, it would be way easier to execute.

After another glance, she slipped into the room.

Any other occupant might not have heard her, but there was no chance of Hawks missing her. He always knew, his quirk was just that powerful. However, tonight it wasn’t about his quirk. Tonight Kaina wanted to simply have little Hawks something for himself.

Even if it was only a cupcake she had stolen from the bakery this afternoon.

Of course, she hadn’t really stolen it. She left the money on the counter but she couldn’t have anybody see her.

“What are you doing here?” The small voice didn’t sound as excited as it usually did. He must be down bad.

“It’s five to twelve, Hawks. You know what that means?”

“Birthday?”

She smiled as she sat down next to him, careful not to squish anything. He was so tiny still.

“Exactly. It’s a special day, just for you. But because we’re busy with work, we have to keep it small and secret. It’s just between you and me.” The next moment, her smile turned sly as she pulled out a little lighter to light the candle on top of the cupcake. “Now you blow it out and make a wish, but you can’t say it out loud. Otherwise, it won’t come true.”

“Okay.” With a determined nod, Hawks breathed in and–
