OKAY SO UM

@omgcheckplease is a comic about college hockey! One of the college hockey bros is Jack, who is not… the most emotionally ept character, so he takes two years to realize he’s in love with Bitty, the protagonist. But you get HINTS leadng up to this that are about to hit his head like a cast-iron pan.

And one of those is that he takes a photography class the semester before, and his photos are all of stuff around campus: geese, his teammates, the hockey rink, more geese… 

And there’s a kind of behind-the-scenes post where his photography classmates are like WHY ARE ALL YOUR PICTURES OF THIS ONE SPECIFIC TEAMMATE WHAT DOES HE MEAN TO YOU EMOTIONALLY and he just like… does not get it. He wants to talk about his pictures of geese. “Geese portraits.”

(And to photograph wildlife is to risk their wrath, especially in nesting season, so he’s kind of badass for shoving a camera in geese’s faces. And like ignoring his potential love life when chasing after something difficult to pursue and capture–whether that’s geese or hockey–is kind of A Thing for him, and also he’s Canadian, and Canada Geese are infamous, and well.)

So ALSO there’s this blog called @shitty-check-please-aus with the motto “these are not good but they’re fun“. Like, one suggestion is “jack has a full back tattoo of a poorly drawn moose face, with a small canada goose on his ribs“.

But it became a THING, like, a BEAUTIFUL CHALLENGE to take these ideas and do something actually artistic with them! Like, someone proposed, “Swan Princess AU but Jack is a Goose Prince” and someone made actual fic out of it!

SO. One day shitty-check-please-aus posted, “soulmate au where one person finds a goose who leads them to the other person. the difficulty comes in not being mauled by a goose” and somebody else began their fic (about a different Check Please character) thus:

Growing up, Nursey had always assumed he’d be excited when he finally had his Gooseday.

Young Nursey had, of course, failed to take into account how God damn massive, not to mention murderous, fucking geese are.

When Nursey finally wakes up one morning to find his goose standing beside his bed, he actually feels something more akin to panic than excitement.

AND THUS THE TAG WAS BORN.

oh wow, now THAT is a compliment! Means I’m doing something super good in writing her.  (also @noisypaintersong has said they’re going to be posting more fics of her today and I’d completely recommend their blog even before that)

Lisa is a character from the old Vehicle Voltron show that aired along with the Lion Voltron version back in the 80s.  Vehicle Voltron was never as popular as the Lion one and there was only one season of it - though there was a cross-over movie and a tendency of VV characters to show up in Lion comics etc.  Both @nomadicism and @voltronfandomhag  have a lot more detail about Oldtron on their blogs.  Long story short, Lisa was a member of a non-lion Voltron that based off a space ship that was out looking for other planets for humanity to settle and facing off against the Galra/Drule in weekly ‘fight the robeast’ episodes.  She was shown giving history/folk lore lessons to the crew (and doing some impressive Egyptian yodeling) while everyone was outside to watch a comet in one episode, got so immersed in reading her romance novel that she didn’t notice a meteor shower the ship she was on went through in another episode, figured out when the young teammate faked getting a letter from home because he was so worried about his family and helped coach him around to getting back into the fight when their team needed them, made (one of my favorite ‘character introduction moments) two of the hot heads of the team stop fight and snap to sharp attention for her with nothing but her ‘school teacher’ voice and generally managed to do some beautiful team/leadership support thought the series.

Also she cracks a terrible joke after she leaves Voltron legless when she’s shot out of formation just as Voltron is forming (to answer the ‘why doesn’t anyone ever attack Voltron when they’re forming’ question - in VV they do).

I loved her when I was a kid and getting drawn back into Voltron as an adult had me going back over some of my old favs and picking her up again.  I rped her for a while and just before season two, I ended up with a lovely Shiro writer as a writing partner and - dang, the characters just clicked so well and fit together so well and filled in each other’s weaknesses as support so well that I fell in love with the pairing.  So I pulled out a little canoe, wrote some fics, pushed it out into the water and started to sail the tiniest ship.  And what do you know, lo and behold, along the way I started to pick up passengers who helped row.   Its so much fun

But seriously, its a bit old and does have a bit of the ye olde 80s cartoon issues with it but I really do recommend watching the old Vehicle Voltron to anyone.  Especially after the ending of VLD.  It’s choppy and there are too many active characters to give them all equal screen time but its got fun characters, an amazing Peter Cullens voiced ship commander, three pretty darn spunky girls that hold their own on a ship full of guys and a plot that will make you realize that ‘bad guys’ as ‘a conflicted group of people with different motivations and ways of doing things that aren’t necessarily ALL bad’ can really be done right and that a team of young adults lead by a hothead with a heart of gold can really be a family in all the multi-leveled ways a group of people can.  Lisa doesn’t show up all the time but when she does she shines and the rest of the team is right there on the shiny levels too.

They ruined all the fun, too! 

But that’s exactly why I started watching Voltron - because I didn’t have to worry. I know that sounds native, but Shiro wasn’t going to die after Season 1. He’s a main character and one of the heroes. And Zarkon’s the former Black Paladin? No worries. The good guys are going to band together and win. 

Am I going to learn life lessons along the way? Absolutely. 

Keith is going to open up to the rest of the team and accept them as family. Hunk is going to stop being so scared. Lance is going to mature and grow into the hero we know him to be - able to joke but also be a serious fighter. Pidge is going to find the people who will cherish her for who she is. And Shiro is going to let the leader mask fall and show his scars to the team - those on the inside and on the out. 

Everything is going to be okay, and if they’re not we’re going to get through it. We learn, we grow, we win - social, ethical, moral, and physical battles. 

We’re stronger together. 

But Voltron isn’t. 

Apart, we grow (Keith). We can only develop by taking someone else’s place (Lance). We can’t win, no matter how hard we try (Shiro, Lotor). You can only be a hero if you allow yourself to be demoted (Allura). The only family that matters is our own (Pidge), and we’re not so scared but…not because we’ve combated those fears but just because we outlived them (Hunk).  

I came here to have a good time, and all I get is heartache and reinforced stereotypes, coupled with negative messages.

tbh i took one look at sabrina's new edgy thing and i was like ............................nah

like i'm not 100% opposed to edgy content, i mean i watch castlevania for god's sake, but some things just don't *need* to be edgy and sabrina the teenage witch is one of those things

I don’t watch Voltron, but I got a laugh out of this! I saw the rare was named Sabertron and for some reason was expecting a Transformers reference (Cybertron?), but as soon as I saw the five mechanical cats and the goblin saying “Five mini cats come together to form one super cat!”, it clicked. XD
