i don’t post about Magic much but i just gotta say something.
i really, really dislike the upcoming Marvel set. and i used to be neutral fine on Universes Beyond.
maybe it’s just my dislike of Wizards of the Coast. maybe it’s my deep dislike for Marvel as a company and overall property. but it’s really soured my feeling of the game and the previous Universes Beyond, which i didn’t really care about! but now i look at them and go…. bleugh.
i don’t care for the theming. i don’t know comics so a lot of the characters are nothing to me. the cards i have seen are… fine, design wise. i guess. i like Dooms Day and Doom in a vacuum. every uncommon creature is Legendary. i want vanilla and french vanilla creatures back. i don’t care about the plane of New York.
i think a lot of my issues are with the fact that i’ve become jaded to crossovers, sequels, remakes, and the like generally. i don’t care for rehashing an old IP because it’s a safe bet for making money. and Universes Beyond is just that, but i can’t ignore it because the cards are fucking good and i would put them in decks if they were themed differently. but now i’m closing myself off from strong or interesting cards because its got Squirrel Girl or Doctor Doom on it. and i do not care for either.
i don’t know. i’m a grumpy Magic boomer apparently, despite the fact that i started playing between Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim.
i think part of what’s caused Midnight Mass to stick in my head so aggressively is that it’s about so much. it’s about walking away from christianity. it’s about alcoholism. its about faith and extremism and how people become radicalized, sometimes without realizing it’s happening. and it manages to balance them all really well.
it’s a meaty show that i will be continuing to think about for a while.
it brings joy to my poor hater heart that the Magic the Gathering and Garfield (the cat) crossover Secret Lair has not sold out. i’m sad all the others did (that Aura Shards is probably my favorite art that’s come out in a while), but hopefully this shows to Wizards that folks are tired of the IP crossovers.
