How do you think this thing does up? It's very fitted and over armour. So there has to be an opening somewhere.

I do not think it's the center front because there is an elaborate beehive in the way (I assumed either embroidered or applique + embroidery). Judging by the backs of other people in similar garments, it's not a back closure either. The little shield shape between his armpit and the beehive looks like an attachment point of a lance rest. It's not very clear as to if there is a riding slit in the front of the skirt panel.

Maybe the opening is under the arm on the side not in view (does lace up or close with hook & eyes)? Or maybe it closes like the square-necked coats of the 16th century? Like this ↓. Would that work on a round neck?
