#3789 - Marchantia berteroana - Bonfire Liverwort
Growing in the South Hill Cemetery and in a tunnel underneath the Steampunk museum in Oamaru.
A large liverwort found in much of the Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctica. It prefers moist habitat but is also one of the first plants to colonise burnt out areas.
It's a dioicous species, with plants producing either male or female gametangia. I suspect the plants in the photos above are all female, since the male reproductive structures are shorter and less elaborate. The crater-like structures are gemma cups, that catch falling rain to splash out gemmulas, bundles of cells they use to spread asexually.
