Roy L. Hunter was born in 1924 on a farm in Glenwood in McDowell County, North Carolina. He worked on the farm until he married Gurthie Morgan on Dec 11, 1942.
In 1955 they started a small business, Hunter's Liver Mush. Liver Mush is an historical meat product that farmers' wives made out of the pork liver and head parts. They would cook the meat in a pot, debone it and crush it into small pieces. They would add cornmeal and flour to thicken and season to taste.
In the old days, it was molded in pots and pans and put on the back porch in the winter months to stay cold. It would last about one month with no refrigeration. Liver Mush was being made in 1843 when McDowell County was founded.
Liver Mush is derived from a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch recipe and today is a regional food that is only made in the Piedmont and foothills of North Carolina.
Roy worked at the Drexel Plant and Gurthie made Liver Mush on the kitchen stove. Most of their Liver Mush was made for Willard Brook's "Willard's Foodland" in Marion. Willard's last store was where Dove’s is located in East Marion. Much of the Liver Mush was sold house-to-house. Roy sold Liver Mush to the Drexel Furniture Company and Cross Cotton Mill employees.
In 1957, the family remodeled the garage building and used that facility for 3 years. The business expanded in 1960 and remained there until 1967 when the operation moved into the new masonry plant where it is today on Poteat Road in Marion.
Roy L. and Gurthie had four children: Jerry (b. 20 Nov 1948), Carolyn (b. 27 Nov 1952), Louise (b. 29 Dec 1957), and Phyllis (b. 10 Oct 1963).
