@livemerciful gets mama diaz
“you got to talk to me, ‘mijo. you never used to be this quiet.“ she worries sometimes. dear ma’ always tells her as much, that she shouldn’t. miguel is a teenager after all, and more control over their lives often showed in signs of rebellion. though even when he was away from the good path, when she saw rage and anger, her miguelilto always found a way back. “come on, when was the last time we did something just the two of us? no karate, no crazy stuff, just the two of us?”
@livemerciful gets a thing because i said so <3
it was a small affair, just his parents and a couple people from the school board. at least, that’s all he thought it was going to be. when he saw miguel walk into the room with his mother, robby’s throat constricted and he forgot how to breathe. this was it. this was the end. diaz was going to tell them that he didn’t feel safe. that robby shouldn’t be let back in school. that he was a threat to society of whatever. do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars. he actually looked to the door like he was going to make a run for it. but miguel spoke out in his favor instead, saying that any hard feelings against him were personal. acknowledging that it was an accident, and that it could have happened to any of them. he went on and on, providing one hell of a speech. robby didn’t think it was that long, but it felt like he was talking forever. and all robby could do was stare.
then it ended, the school board said that he could come back to school on a trial basis, as long as both miguel and carmen signed off on it. it felt like a dream, like someone was going to pinch him and he would wake up on his lumpy mattress and go back to the sad reality that was his life. but he never woke up. this wasn’t a dream. it was really happening, he was going back to school. and he had only one person to thank for that. he caught up with miguel before he made it back to his car, and considered reaching for his arm to stop him as he called out his name. but that seemed like a sure fire way to reverse whatever the hell just happened back there. “miguel,” he called out again, slowing to a stop and waiting for — his what? they weren’t friends. karate rivals, enemies, fuck. he didn’t want to turn into his father. miguel finally turned around and robby pushed a hand through his hair, tugging on his roots at the back of his head. “—thank you.”
