The current global challenges we face were addressed by the United Nations at the 2015 UN Summit. In response, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the world leaders. This vision included 17 set goals that aim to end all forms of poverty, reduce inequalities and sustain the environment while ensuring that no one is left behind.Â
Goal 3 or the âGood Health and Well-beingâ goal seeks to ensure healthy living and promote well-being for all at all ages. It focuses on winning against diseases and other causes of mortality. It also pursues to promote individuals to develop healthy lifestyles and fitness routines. Gladly, the government, along with other organizations is making pathways for people to enter a healthy life. It is done by providing virtually everyone access to healthcare education, medicine, quality healthcare services and immunization programs. Basically, all that is left now is for people to give their participation and commitment to this goal but creating awareness still remains to be a problem, as there are people who are not knowledgeable of the matter. Â
Non-communicable diseases cover the large part of the leading causes of mortality, mainly heart-related illnesses and strokes. These diseases are caused by heredity, poor diet and practices, excessive or inadequate use of substances and physical inactivity. Essentially, if there is no trace of these diseases in your family, you could very much avoid it by nurturing your discipline of having a healthier lifestyle. Each individual literally has the choice of improving. But it is easier said than done, because there are some people who have problems regarding their control and restraint. To compensate, some groups or individuals help people build their routines and lifestyles through healthy practices. Additionally, articles about miracle juices and body tricks that claim to make you healthy for weeks are either mere click-baits or claims without credible evidences. The influences brought by the internet sometimes avert the progress in achieving the goal rather than to support it.
Communicable diseases are the other leading causes of deaths. These are transmitted via number of ways, namely airborne, vector-borne, droplet-borne and direct contact. But avoidance and isolation is not enough to prevent the transmission of diseases. Sooner or later, we are bound to be exposed so a procedure known as vaccination is done to immunize individuals of all age from certain illnesses. However, false beliefs and one-sided arguments about vaccines circulate through the media. Anecdotes and articles such as âVaccines Can Cause Autism and Allergic Reactions to Your Childâ are poorly based on facts but greatly based on feelings. The truth is that the deaths caused by malaria or measles are very visible in the media, unlike the alleged harm that could be caused by vaccines. As a result, some parents refuse to give their children consent in fear of obtaining these so-called side effects. This is a problem in eradicating illnesses completely. Moreover, some toddlers and babies die due to absence of immunity, which is contrary to the very goal of ensuring healthy lives at all ages.
In conclusion, people need to be critically aware of the information regarding the challenges we face today so we can take part in helping achieve this goal. We need to associate ourselves with the activities we must do to achieve a better world. We could promote and encourage the people we know to shift from careless living to a thoughtful one. Although it is understandable to not engage actively due to personal reasons and interests, it should be noted that by improving yours and the lives of the ones you care about, you are already doing your part in participating. Live in care. Donât underestimate the power of oneâs decision because it always makes an impact to the world most of us are trying to protect.
