She scoffed like his suggestion personally offended her. “No! Apparently my landlord was serious, my rent is doubling as of next week.” Thorsen’s eyes bugged at her predicament even if she knew he didn’t totally understand it. Grumbling more to herself than anyone in the now growing crowd of half-asleep officers, “Turns out he really did mean murder discount for only a year, rude,” Lucy muttered with an exasperated roll of the head and sag of the shoulders. Sliding into the row behind Thorsen, Lucy continued despite the fresh wave of frustration washing over her—every explanation of her situation just solidifying her fate, “I can’t afford it, looks like I’m back to apartment hunting.” Another long, drawn out groan ended with a pout she knew would not be leaving her face anytime soon. “Maybe I’ll even find a place that only needs five deadbolts!” she lilted with the sarcasm dripping off every word.
