Hello, hello, and happy world building wednesday to you! You mentioned that you were busy with irl stuff, so take your time with answering, okay? So, I know you like building monsters, and I was curious. To your people, what is the scariest creature(s) in your world? What about them makes people scared of them? What about that creature makes it the very last thing they ever want to cross paths with?
Thank you for the kind message!! But this one excited me too much so I kinda went off lol I'm so sorry in advance.
A really simple answer to this… is Humans. Monsters are scary, and a real threat. But… No matter how scary, gory, or monstrous the creatures are, humans are worse. The main big bad in Book 1, is the human that created corruption and thus created some really bad monsters in the first place. My main big bad in book 2 is the Usurper of Pyria that displaced, murdered and ravaged innocent people, promoting a false message to spread peace and equality. Monsters are scary, but humans are truly monstrous. Monsters can not control themselves. But, Humans can.
WITH THAT BEING SAID...
I do wanna brainstorm ramble about one of the coolest creatures I'm developing! This is a monster no one wants to cross paths with and some even think of it as the judgmental devil.
Lithes!
If you are unlucky enough to see their faces, you are probably dead. But, a few report sightings of lithes consuming others (strictly humans), and disappearing. These are their reports:
Appearance:
Ghost-like: barely see an outline of a human figure, but its limbs are elongated enough to make you feel uneasy. would make anyone question if it was human.
Typically hooded, wearing robes
If it is dark outside, it will have a dark outline at night. If it is sunny outside, it will have a reflective/bright outline. Either way, hard to notice if you are not looking for it. This implies that they are not affected by the sun, the moon, or anything otherworldly. Their power seems to come from somewhere else.
Faces: Pale bones / Skull.
Some report non-human elements to the skull. Some report horns. Some report antlers. Some report a bear skull.
This section is full of discrepancies because, if you are unlucky enough to catch their gaze and see their faces, you are already dead.
Movement:
They have sharp, non-human movements. They do not move in a fluid motion, rather in a broken motion. It is not easily described. They move as erratically as a hand ticking on a clock.
The only thing fluid about them is their purple eyes, trailing in smooth motions as it moves. They say, if you see trailing purple lines, run for your life. Or better yet… Pray to your Gods. All of them. Because, you are dead already. And, it is not taking you to any afterlife your God believes in.
Some believe Lithes to be old spirits of the land come to claim the evil souls. These are told in stories to scare children into behaving; to teach morals to criminals, and to teach soldiers when retreat is acceptable.
Based on reports Lithes only need to lock eyes with you and it will begin sucking your soul. So if you are lucky enough to see purple in the eyes of your companion… Run.
