Multatuli is the pseudonym of Edouard Douwes Dekker, a staunch anti-colonialism activist during the Dutch colonization period in what was formerly known as the Dutch Indies (now Indonesia). Multatuli means "I've suffered a great deal during my life". His novel Max Havelaar paints a grim picture of the Dutch colonization period, while sympathizing with the colonized subjects. This book is a great entry point for us to discuss how the legacy of Dutch colonialism persists until today. As American writer William Faulkner said, "the past is not dead, it is not even past".
