CELEBRATION! List Four: My Top 5 Favorite Anime
Anime is a very important thing to me. The shows on this list, I love deeply and I have the greatest respect for the creators, artists, and actors that made these shows that I hold so close to my heart. So, here's my list of what anime I consider my favorite. Don't agree? Let me know what your favorite anime is!
Before we get started, however, I want to mention Avatar: The Last Airbender.
This is one of the best cartoons (if not the best) ever made and it pays homage to the anime aesthetic, while still maintaining a wonderfully Western sense of humor. I can't count it on this list as it's not technically anime, but I just want you guys to know how unbelievably awesome this show is and how I love it. It's one of my favorite shows, for sure. On to the list!
5: Inu-Yasha (Mangaka: Rumiko Takahashi, Courtesy of Sunrise and Viz Media, 2000-2004, 2009-2010)
Inu-Yasha is my first true anime love. It was my favorite show for a long time and I will never forget the fond memories I have for it. It's not the best and it's far from the most compelling. In all intents and purposes, it's a standard long running shounen. Despite that, though, I love it. I love the characters and their struggles and their relationships. It's not the greatest show, but it will always have a place in my heart. And thank goodness for The Final Act because the ending to the original show is just plain awful.
4: Cowboy Bebop (Director: Shinichiro Watanabe, courtesy of Sunrise, 1999)
This is one of the most famous and important anime to date. It transcended barriers and made it cool for Western audiences to watch. It's impact and influence has been enormous and lasting and it is often cited as one of the best (if not the best) anime of all time. And it is great. Everything about this show is awesome: the animation, the characters, the setting, the plot, and the music! The music is a whole separate entity. Bebop's soundtrack is the most widely known and widely revered anime soundtracks ever and it was wonderfully orchestrated by the lovely Yoko Kanno. If you want to consider yourself an anime fan, you have to see this show. It is a must. Go see it. Right now. Why are you still reading this? I'm serious! Go!
3: Eureka 7 (Director: Tomoki Kyoda, Courtesy of Studio Bones, 2005-2006)
I love this show. Everything about it, I love. I love the main characters, I love their love story, I love the animation, and the music is good too! Though it's surrounded by mechs, war, politics, confusion, and conspiracy, at it's core, Eureka 7 is a love story. But all the other components often sometimes deter the would-be lovers from really coming together, until the very end. It's wonderful and I dare-say beautiful and the last episode makes me cry every single time I watch it. It's a great show that is so underrated. Everyone should give it a chance.
2: Ouran High School Host Club (Mangaka: Bisco Hatori, Courtesy of Studio Bones and Funimation, 2006)
OH MY GOODNESS, I LOVE THIS SHOW SOOO MUCH!!!!! XD I have had an intense love for Ouran ever since I wearily checked out it's first episode online. It was not at all what I was expecting it to be and I am so glad that I watched it. I now own every episode on DVD, which is actually a first for me. It's much more than a gender-bending reverse harem. It is a show that on one coin pokes fun at shows that use those tropes, but on the opposite coin, pays tribute to them. Many people I know who have heard of it, but haven't seen it just think it's a show about "a bunch of gay guys" and it scares them away from watching it. Before I saw the show, I just thought it was a fluffy, girly, shounen-ai. But in actuality, none of the main characters are gay. They are pretty much all in love with the main female character, who could really care less. And it is much more than it seems to be. Don't judge this show by it's surface. It is hilarious, witty, silly, surprisingly well animated, loveable, heartfelt, and at times very poignant and quiet. It is my favorite anime comedy and my favorite shoujo. My love for it just grows.
1: Fullmetal Alchemist (Mangaka: Hiromu Arakawa, Courtesy of Studio Bones and Funimation, 2003-2004, 2009-2010)
I can't even describe to you just how deep my love for this show is. It is the most thought provoking and emotional story I have ever come into contact with. I even cry just thinking about it. It's that meaningful and impactful to me. It is a beautifully woven story about two brothers trying to right a wrong after the death of their mother. Their bond is so incredibly powerful and beautiful that I am slightly jealous. I wish my relationship with my brother was that strong. They are the most important people in each others lives and they just so happen to be thrust into a world of magic, conspiracy, questions of morality, and the question of whether the dead can truly come back to life. All in all, they search for something that can change them back to the way they once were, but they quickly discover that what they seek will be far from easy to obtain and it may kill them in the pursuit. Both series of FMA (the 2003 original and 2009's Brotherhood) are great, so great, in fact, that I can't chose between them. I have tried, but I just can't, so I'll lump them together and say that as a whole, FMA is my favorite. Both shows are very different and have very different endings and outcomes, but both are so wonderfully crafted and both have a wonderfully different story to tell. Despite their differences, both versions have the same brotherly heart and that's what makes FMA as a whole so fantastic.
Thanks for reading!! More lists to come!
