pick a whump option that I'm weirdly obsessed with inflicting on my faves
impalement
evisceration
hallucinations/delirium
repeated deaths
vivisection
hand trauma
the problem with being a villainfucker and then writing original fiction is that you will end up in love with your own villain. which is not necessarily a problem but I'm not talking, like, "ooh you're so evil it's fun and I'm cackling about it" kind of way, I'm talking about an "oh no my precious baby angel you're awful and I love you, let me swaddle you in a blanket like a cat that needs its claws trimmed, I want you to have nice things"
which. like. does create some problems when it comes to the need to have the antagonist, you know, ultimately lose
on this edition of "talking about writing whump fic makes me sound a little unhinged"
hate how susceptible I am to a well constructed argument. I can have an opinion that I feel relatively certain of and then I'll read someone really articulately and cogently defending a different one and be like. but maybe I'm just wrong.
to be clear I am not referring to factual information or anything provable. I am referring specifically to subjective opinions. and it's not just a matter of being willing to change my mind which I think is a good thing, it's specifically the sudden and acute self-doubt that comes from reading a sophisticated rhetorical defense of a position that contradicts my own

funny to me the number of relationships in fandoms where the arc of my experience has been something like "generally I prefer this sibling (or sibling-esque) relationship as platonic though I can see where the shippers are coming from" downward to "you know, the shippers are really onto something, actually"
in two cases this was mostly because the porn was really good (though the shippers were always onto something regardless).
was going to be irritable like "where is this ship I personally don't like coming from, it's built on crumbs and scraps and hypotheticals" and then I had to stop, look at myself, and go.
"lise. you have personally built several hundred thousand words of fanfiction on a foundation built on crumbs and scraps and hypotheticals, arguably in more than one fandom, babe, watch yourself"
it's probably a good thing I can't take a superior position here. I mean, I can still argue that my crumbs and scraps and hypotheticals are more character accurate than yours but like. ultimately sometimes we're all a little bit crumbs and scraps here in the non-canonical ship department
an important part of joining a new fandom is discovering what my new fandom-specific neuroses are going to be in this one. and I am rapidly getting into that process
