liquiddiamond replied to your post āTonightās question from Farm Baby: āMommy, do dogs have birthdays?ā
All of my dogs that I have had were rescue dogs, and we never knew their exact birth date-but my dog Scamp(who has passed) we decided Christmas day was his birthday. :D he even opened up his own presents and everything
My sister answered with the date that sheād rescued the dog in question from a shelter seven years ago. :)

liquiddiamond answered your question:OK this didnāt work from my phone, but Iām trying...
uh yeah that actually might be the Blair Witch or something equally wrong. Iām actually lying in bed right now listening to a bunch of coyotes howl/yip yip/do whatever it is when they hunt/eat. THAT noise you recorded thoughā¦yikes.
RIGHT? Yeah, coyotes sound like a space ship taking off, and itās eerie as hell but itās not like, threatening.
And that video doesnāt convey the growling. And the first night, i was like, maybe the thingās far away. Maybe the growling is just really loud, and only seems like itās close.
But the second night-- no, it circled us. Growling. It was down in the creek, echoing off the banks, it was out on the path. It was clearly to the east of us in the woods, to the north of us in the creek and up the other bank, to the west of us in the barnyard and close to the house, to the south of us on the path and in the garden. It was all over the place. And if it had a nose or ears it could not fail to notice that there were humans right fucking there, and for some of it we were definitely awake and talking.
And thereād be silence for a while, and Iād think it was gone. And then it would growl. Real low. Sort of quiet.
Real close.
It was damned unnerving. And the fact that it kept going for so long indicated to me that it wasnāt passing through. It was hanging around. And why would it growl? Vixens bark to kind of stake out territory. Barking, you can hear for a distance. Growling doesnāt really carry. So you donāt growl to mark territory. You growl for-- what? Because youāre mad, mostly, in my experience. Iām no behaviorist or anything.
Anyway. Fucked-up. Iām going back in a week and Iāll be sleeping there alone so I hope whatever it is has gotten the fuck over itself in the meantime.Ā
I know I didnāt disturb anythingās den! Thereās been a junk pile there, then last yearās real haphazard yurt platform, and then this platform, itās not like that used to be some important thing where animals chilled out. Itās not, itās just a chunk of former junk. Thereās not even a deer trail. Whatever that thing was, it was probably there for the chicken blood they sprinkled around the garden as a deer deterrent. I should have asked them not to, but I didnāt expect a chupacabras.
Is there a version of the chupacabras thatās into chickens instead of goats? Chupapollos? I donāt know. Ā
liquiddiamond replied to your post āThe Lost KingsĀ is now a completed work. I have more to tell about...ā
I clicked on the link and it's not completed? I hope ao3 didn't eat it? have a fun time camping though :D
You were right, it didnāt look posted from my phone either. It should be working now, though? I just reloaded the page and itās there.Ā
THanks for saying something! I was sort of bummed that nobody had left a comment yet! I was like, I know that was a mediocre announcement post, but-- LOL. Oh well. Technology. I really really was in a hurry for that shower.Ā
Iām not actually really camping-camping-- Iām at the farm, but thereās so much family here that I set up my yurt from last summer and was sleeping there. I think Iām actually going to keep staying in it, even though the guest room is free now-- the out of town family migrated back across town to Momās house-- but now at least the shower is not An Ordeal to get into.Ā
I just have like zero time with the computer, and even less than usual because the yurt is, alas, out of wi-fi range. I might actually be able to do something about that-- the greenhouse has power and is only about 200 feet away, so I could get a range extender to the barn and another to the greenhouse, but it becomes a question of whether I want to bother.Ā
Except that itās so peaceful out there and if I set up the picnic table I could really get a lot of writing done... if ever I had time to sit out there. Ha.
liquiddiamond replied to your post āI should find the post I made a while back about the terrorist...ā
I'm not against gun control either, but I have reservations about how legislation could even start to further regulate. I was talking to someone on facebook the other day about this, and I thought I was being pretty low-key and non-inflammatory about everything, and it escalated pretty quickly into people telling me more or less that if I was NOT ANTI-GUN, like all guns, all people kind of thing, then I was a shitty person. And I just had to end the convo because reasons
Yeah. I keep seeing a lot of really heated posts on here and literally the only position Iāve seen anyone endorse is actual disgusting reductive classist rhetoric that anyone who would actually want a gun is a man with a small penis and a disgusting desire for control. I have zero interest in getting involved in that kind of debate on *any* topic, so I donāt engage. But. I mean.Ā
I guess Iāll talk about it a little bit behind the cut, and there are discussions of animal injury because Iām talking about why people even own guns in the first place, and if you donāt want to think about that then donāt read it, Iām not here to shove anything at anyone. And Iām not defending fucking assault rifles or any of it, Iām just saying, literally every post Iāve seen has been predicated on the assumption that *only* a maniac would *ever* want a gun, and thatās just not how most Americans live.Ā
Iām not writing this particularly because I want to talk about it! But I am writing it because I feel like there have to be other people who are stuck in the same boat as me, and itās a shitty boat to be stuck in.
Where I grew up everyone had guns. I believe my childhood home had at least two handguns, three .22 rifles (one semi-automatic, and I donāt know if most people know what that means-- it means that it reloads the gun automatically as part of firing, not as a separate action), and at least two larger-caliber rifles (I know this one for sure, Iāve used it in re-enactments), plus an assortment of historic muskets, and a shotgun or two. Everyone hunts; deer are delicious and reproduce quickly and destroy crops. Every farmer has a nuisance permit. We used them to euthanize injured livestock, to destroy predators and pest animals on a working farm. (And gosh, there are a lot of people who are so upset at the thought of that, but-- you get a nuisance raccoon that comes in and one by one picks off every one of your laying hens despite your efforts to secure the coop? Itās worse animal cruelty to the poor hens to let it continue, regardless of the fact that those hens are your livelihood/ food source. And you show up at the pasture in the morning to feed your pigs, and sometime in the night one of the hogs mustāve stepped on one of the piglets and his back is broken and heās crying? You have to put him out of his misery, and a gun is the only effective and safe way to do that. The vet will do the exact same thing you would, it is not more humane to make that poor suffering animal wait the two or three hours itāll take for a vet to make a house call, or worse, traumatize the animal by shoving it into a car to go be killed by a vet when itās never left the farm before. Farming is hard. You canāt make it easier.)Ā
They were one of many tools around the farm. Iāve always been terrified of guns, but Iām also terrified of tractors, and I learned to drive those, so at least Iād know. So Iāve learned to target-shoot, and itās mildly entertaining, but itās always been utilitarian for me. And Iām absolutely terrified of some mouthbreathing religious extremist taking offense at my lifestyle and coming into a place my friends and I go, and blowing us all away-- of course Iām terrified of that! And no, I donāt believe that if I had a gun I could stop a man like that, because I know Iām extremely hesitant to use one, and so I wouldnāt carry one if I had it. But thatās my decision. My sister doesnāt feel the same way; sheās getting her permit.
Iām not a man with a tiny penis. Sheās not a man with a tiny penis. She doesnāt have a gun out of a desire for control over others. I can barely even stand to shoot the thing at a metal can full of water. (I do, and I donāt flinch, because itās a tool I should know how to use, and I do.)Ā
And when I was a teenage girl, and knew I lived 25 minutes from the nearest police station, and a creepy breather got into the habit of calling our house, and since I went to a different high school than my sisters I was sometimes home alone, yes, I found it extremely reassuring that I knew where the handgun and the ammunition were kept (separately). I planned out my route through the house so Iād be able to grab both even if I was running away from someone. And if I couldnāt, well, downstairs in the office, the wall decoration is Dadās collection of historic long guns, and for display purposes all the muskets have their bayonets fixed. He uses them for re-enactments, and it takes a minute and a half to load a single round, but a bayonet is just a big knife.Ā
When we first moved into our house, it had been vacant a long time (old farmhouse at the dead-end of an unpaved road ten miles out of town), and a lot of people were used to it being vacant and abandoned, and had used the place for parties-- and drug deals. When we first moved in, I was on the way and my sister was an infant. On weekend nights especially, for that first spring and summer they lived there, Dad always answered the door with a businesslike manner and a holstered pistol, because sometimes people didnāt want to accept that this great party/drug-dealing spot was now occupied, and attempted to argue the matter, especially if they had already been partying before they got here and thus werenāt in a great position for logic. The arguments always immediately ceased when they noticed the gun, because even a drunk can recognize what one of those is. And then they didnāt come back, and there was no more trouble.Ā
A lot of my family has gotten very bitter because of the rhetoric, and has entrenched themselves even more firmly in the pro-gun camp-- because the only arguments the opposition make areĀ āno one should ever have guns anywayā andĀ āanyone who has them is a loathsome creepā, basically-- and even a quite reasonable-looking post I read recently advanced the notion that you should only legally be able to store any guns you owned at a firing range, and I thought, that is *not* going to work out for literally anyone I know who has a gun. I donāt know anyone who keeps them just for pleasure target shooting. I know people do, but nobody I know.
And like. Sometimes people, who are not loathsome creeps or maniacs, *do* have guns. And we absolutely should legislate them some more, and we absolutely need to break the stranglehold of the NRAās lobbyists, and we certainly donāt need to be encouraging angry young men to buy military-grade weapons (I threw up in my mouth when I read that publishing the make and model of guns used in mass shootings makes sales of that exact gun skyrocket every time)-- but on the other hand, telling everyone who owns a gun that theyāre a disgusting sack of shit is not really the way to get that debate to go smoothly, you know?Ā
And very occasionally, people are like,Ā ābut we only mean the military weapons!ā Listen. Thatās not a hard-and-fast distinction. Almost every weapon my family owns is or was military-grade at some point. The one .22 rifle we have is a nice skeet-shooting gun that was my grandfatherās, and the only magazine that was ever made for it was a ten-round magazine. Itās now illegal to have more than a seven-round magazine under the NY SAFE act, but they sort of realized that the only magazines ever made for a lot of guns have ten rounds, and in fact basically no rifle ever has had a seven-round magazine for it ever manufactured. And so the actual, legal state of things in NY is that we can have that ten-round magazine for that gun, but we can only put seven bullets into it at once. That is not only ridiculous but also stupid and dangerous. Why would you do that. (Once youāve put a bullet in, you canāt see it anymore; I always lose count, so I just load it until the spring doesnāt compress. Then I know there are ten, so I know when I am done firing that the gun is really truly clear, and the range is safe. Donāt fuck with how many bullets i have and make me get confused about whether my gun is loaded, that is really dangerous and stupid.)
I donāt want to get into the debate at all! I donāt live in the country anymore; I havenāt touched a gun in at least a year, probably longer. I donāt really care, for myself. But.Ā It is awful to listen to people I agree with on so many other things call my family and friends disgusting horrible maniacs compensating for their whatever whatever. It makes me not want to even *think* about gun control. Because if I bring it up here, everyone wants to tell me how disgusting I am for not immediately condemning my family. And if I bring it up at home, my family wants to tell me how stupid everyone else I know is, and how ignorant, and then they start to get weird about zombies because the monolithic condemnation has pushed them into the bosom of the right-wing nutjobs, and itās just-- it ruins a family reunion, yāknow? (And my family are educated people, by the way-- a smattering of masterās degrees, real actual jobs, everyone at least has a bachelorās, theyāve traveled a lot, theyāre well-read-- these are not at all the people the stereotype is condemning. Which, by the way, is a classist and reductive stereotype.)
And so itās another thing that makes it impossible to actually pass any legislation, because if youāre moderate on this, then literally everyone thinks you are the actual Devil. I am steeling myself like crazy for this next trip home, because I am going to hear about it, I just am. And I donāt want to.Ā
