Ling/Al is a relationship that’s warm, upbeat, and strong-willed. It’s brand new experiences and freedom, childlike playfulness and joy, boundless determination and curiosity.

It’s long nights in the library learning about Xingese politics and alkahestry together. Peaceful days spent sitting beneath a golden sunset and discussing their hopes and plans for the future. Royal feasts with silly, pointless competitions to see who can eat the most. Ling getting Al to help him play dumb pranks on Ed just to see if he’ll fall for them. Al having longed to be able to feel physical affection again spending so long without a real body, and Ling having infinite amounts of it to give. The two of them wandering through Xing and going everywhere they can, seeing every minute as another adventure.

Ling/Al is Al falling in love with Ling’s incredible tenacity and cleverness along with all of his eccentricities, and Ling falling for Al’s deep compassion and selflessness and wisdom. It’s Al’s shy and calm disposition contrasting perfectly with Ling’s carefree and outgoing nature.

It’s something that starts off as a strange and unexpected friendship between an alchemist whose soul is separate from his body and a prince searching for the secret of immortality, but grows into a bold, free-spirited, unfaltering love between two boys who are each working to forge a new future.
