Kara   looked   down   at   the   crimson   streak   snaking   its   way   down   her   arm,   staining   the   fabric   of   her   sleeve.   The   sight   still   felt   surreal   —   blood.   Her   blood.   She   wasn’t   supposed   to   bleed   like   this,   not   here,   not   unless…   Her   jaw   tightened.   Kryptonian   alloy   —   someone   had   come   prepared.

She   heard   Bucky’s   voice   before   she   registered   the   concern   in   it.   He   was   already   moving   toward   her,   brows   furrowed,   metal   arm   flexed   and   ready   for   whatever   came   next.   She   forced   a   breath   through   her   teeth,   the   pain   starting   to   dig   deeper   now   that   adrenaline   was   wearing   thin.

Yelena  didn’t  flinch  at  the  sound  of  his  voice—sharp,  edged  with  that  mix  of  anger  and  concern  she  was  becoming  far  too  familiar  with.  She  yanked  the  combat  vest  over  her  head,  tossed  it  on  the  table,  and  finally  looked  at  him.  Her  eyes  were  steady,  cold,  but  not  unkind.  “I  was  thinking,”  she  said  flatly,  tugging  at  the  bloodied  bandage  on  her  arm,  “that  they  wouldn’t  last  another  day  in  that  hellhole.  And  if  I  waited  for  clearance,  or  backup,  or  precious  planning?  They’d  be  dead.”  Her  voice  didn’t  rise.  That  made  it  worse  somehow—too  calm  for  someone  who’d  just  fought  her  way  through  fire  and  steel  to  drag  out  three  women  who  hadn’t  spoken  a  word  in  weeks.

Yelena  stepped  closer,  her  tone  softening  only  slightly.  “You  know  what  the  Red  Room  makes  of  us.  You,  of  all  people,  know  what  it  means  to  have  someone  else’s  will  crawling  in  your  head.  I  had  to  go.  No  suits  would  understand  that—not  really.  But  you?  You  should.”  Her  eyes  flicked  over  him,  unreadable.
