My moms side of the family is from Panama and sometimes I visit them in Florida. I always really hate the family gatherings though because I don't speak Spanish. The first thing they do is always to greet me in Spanish and try to hold a conversation with me. Then I have to remind them that I don't speak Spanish and they laugh and say "I thought you would have learned by now" I can't understand the conversation at the dinner table. No one caters to me and they only translate when I ask. Try all look at me like 'poor little monolingual American' They condescendingly try to teach me Spanish words. They say their sentences slower as if that will make me suddenly understand Spanish. When I try to say the things they teach me they laugh at my accent. My inability to roll my R's. Sometimes I feel ashamed that I am in a Hispanic house and I don't speak Spanish. Sometimes I try to study or practice the same string of sentences over and over and say them to my relatives all day. But sometimes I'm mad that they would make fun of my effort. I'm mad that they think I'm an outsider. I'm mad that no one is willing to just speak English! But then I realized something This must be how all of them feel everyday of their lives living in America.

I literally go from "omg you guys can't we be nonviolent and work everything out like sensible adults" to "fuck you, I will cut you I will rip your throat out with my teeth I will show up to your funeral and set all the flowers on fire" in 0.002 seconds
