What if the hats in Howl's moving castle represented a certain mindset?
Sophie kept to her plain and simple straw hat despite the variety of pretty hats she makes at the shop. Perhaps the way she held on to the hat was a depiction of how she held on to the belief that she herself was plain. Towards the end of the movie, she finally took on a new hat, also possibly a symbol of her new self confidence.
The witch of wastes has a huge extravagant hat which was jet black in color, which also kinda depicts her huge personality. Her minions all wear the same hat as well when they were following her orders to go after howl in the beginning. Possibly showing how all the minions are programmed to think the same way.
I also think that characters without hats such as Howl could mean that they are open minded. This guy just let's a random old lady, former witch, enemy's dog stay with him. How much more open minded can you get?

It's only human to feel but when you feel too much too fast... you're highly sensitive
and sometimes that sucks
If I were a cat
If I were a cat, I could casually walk up to you and demand you to love me and feed me.
If I were a cat, I could tell you that I liked you by purring and rubbing against you.
Just think of how easy things would be if only I were a cat.

When Taylor Swift sang
"Please don't fall in love with someone else, please don't have somebody waiting on you."
I felt that.
Hide and seek. That’s what it is. A game. The constant push and pull with the fear of being discovered but the rush of excitement for the person hiding. I always thought I had to hide, to drop hints and hide into the shadows. But all the while I was better off as the person seeking. It felt right. I saw things I never saw in the dark. It’s your turn to hide now.

First day of internship. We were told to come in around 11-11.30 am which was unexpected considering how late it is for an internship. When my supervisor said working hours were flexible, we didn’t know the extent of what he meant by flexible until now. We reached around 11am after breakfast at a mamak, another intern greeted us by the gate. The office was actually a house and the inside of it was what could be described as an anthropologist’s dream house. Instead of walls, there were bookshelves that lined the perimeter of the living room. Indigenous tribal ornaments can be seen all about, ranging from dozens and dozens of hand woven baskets to humanoid tribal statues made of wood carvings. Blowpipes arranged vertically along the staircase which lead to the second floor where his office was located. There was a basket full of tripods, digital cameras all over and more bookshelves in his working space. Words can’t describe how I feel about being in such an environment, there was everything that I both love and fear. All the elements were there, the books that spoke of unknown tales of our land and dedicated research efforts; the lot of photography equipment and the strive for the aesthetics appeases my soul on the dedication in providing and creating perspective. I am both excited and afraid of working in such an environment. There is the fear that I cannot live up to expectations, but I am nonetheless determined to learn what I can and persist.
The following would serve as a brief recap on our briefing session which somewhat turned into a three-hour lecture that included a wide range of topics. I felt that our supervisor was super enthusiastic about knowledge in general, the three-hour briefing felt like another day in class back in Sarawak except this time we were focusing on peninsular Malaysia instead of Borneo. Some things that I managed to pick up before I started losing it at the 90-minute mark into the briefing was that he has high expectations on aesthetics so anything to do with media was a good skill I should acquire throughout this internship. Probably should look into how to crack softwares and edit pictures and softwares. A pending task at hand is the designing of a book cover which should ideally be exported in a Portable Document Format (PDF), scanning of documents and video editing of a tutorial on how to google translate. Current problems at hand is the design of the website which is far from expectation as well as setting up of cloud. Also, media should be converted to CyanMagentaYellowBlack (CMYK) from RedGreenBlue(RGB) prior to printing. Documents are scanned for the purpose of easy access especially when it comes to court cases. Everything is indexed and filed systematically. It is also interesting to note that he gets emotional when he talks about losing his drone.
We spent the rest of the afternoon hash-tagging old fb posts for the purpose of tracing old posts. 2 of the staffs took a nap while I typed away on the table in the living room and munched on the fruit platter they set on the table for everyone. A boy named Hakim lingered about throughout the day, he must’ve been around 4-5 years old. He’s shy but it was such a nice feeling when he waved goodbye at me when I left for dinner with a friend. First day of work was pretty chill and unexpected, day 2 coming soon and we were invited to the supervisors birthday dinner. I’m bringing 4 year old tuak for him tomorrow so we’ll see how everything goes tomorrow considering how I’m already bringing alcohol to work on my second day.
