they don’t realize it until they try and remember something important. something valuable. they can’t remember all of their siblings names. their father’s eye color. the smell of their mother. they know they had a beloved pet, but they can’t even remember what it was.

it isn’t until the most important things are lost that they realize they have to begin documenting their life. not for posterity. for themself. so they will know what happened. so they can check, remind themself in the years to come.
