If you are taking the time to read this letter, I can only presume that the inevitable has come to pass in our general field of work. You must’ve been thinking, ‘Oh. How like him, always so prepared,’ Or something along those lines when you opened this. First of all, I would like to apologize. I realize I didn’t make our friendship easy, by any means. I’m not a very charismatic person. If anything, I’d thought in the beginning that you were as tailored and materialistic as most in our occupation are. Outward appearances, inward desires, they’re all rather difficult to read. My cautious nature placed a barrier between us, and you did not deserve that. I dislike how guarded I am. But I know you already knew that, and forgave me. Your kindness is unlike anything I’ve known or anyone I’ve ever met. Yes, that includes my past partner. I don’t have any family. I never told you the embittered details, because I didn’t think it was important. There’s many, many things I have simply come to accept. My name, my past, these all facets fall under that unique category. But, because of this I’ve left it up to my office, and you, to make funeral arrangements— well, it seems pointless to remain on the defensive. My only request is that you make all this a quiet arrangement. I was not a loud, publicly celebrated hero in life, and I’ll be damned if I am made a martyr in death. You probably feel as though I’m selling myself too low, thinking too critically of myself. But I don’t desire attention. For most of my life I had wanted to be left alone, you see. It wasn’t until All Might came that I changed my stance on foresight. And it wasn’t until you taught me how to stand on my own two feet that I became truly formidable and self-sufficent. Tsunagu, I am sorry I didn’t tell you about who Daichiro Murakami was. I’m sorry he couldn’t share stories with you about how stupid high school was. Or if they had a mother that taught them how to sew, or dress in a certain way. Even silly things like whether or not he had obnoxious siblings, or various pseudo-normal complaints. I wish I could’ve showed you my numerous scars, and not cringed when I knew you’d look at them with such soft, empathetic eyes. Maybe it’s because I believe I don’t deserve it. Or don’t need it? Maybe. To be honest, I don’t have an excuse nor an ulterior motive for hiding it. It’s been eleven years, and I still am running, aren’t I—? Maybe that’s the true reason my legs are so long. ( You laughed, didn’t you—? ) Tsunagu, I love you. Took me three months to write that sentence. I can’t crumple up this letter and start it again, because I fear Mirio will ask what it is I’m doing that’s taking up so much time and parchment paper. That boy, he’s quite strong. Bright, at least in an optimistic sense. But I fear that in the action of becoming too close to me, or losing me—- it might hinder his progress, so I need to keep this going. We all need to prepare to bow out, and our successors need to be prepared to suffer as we did. I don’t want him to lose sight of his dreams because of me. So, to get back on topic: Tsunagu, you are, without a doubt—- one of the most important individuals in my life, if not the most important. I don’t mean that in a manner that I expected anything else in return. I don’t expect you to ever love me, or construct a physical / financial relationship. No, your mere existence was enough to console my turbulent heart. I felt blessed to even know you. To call you my best friend. You, who didn’t even hesitate to embrace me, specifically when I was at my worst. You, who never gave up on me, ( and I know I didn’t make it easy. ) For the Tsunagu Hakamata who’s wholly the love of my life: Thank you. You are a hero without an equal, able to mend and protect others. To love them, freely. Or altruistically, despite their faults. I hope that you continue to express this, as well as remain patient with the upcoming generation. Pass this characteristic onto them. Oh, and please do try to keep an eye on my intern. Tsunagu, I’m certain I’d wish I could embrace you. I’d even settle to go shopping with you in that ridiculously crowded department store in Shibuya. Actually, perhaps I shall call you once I’m finished writing this. I’m not dead, yet, after all—-. I guess making use of my current time in this world is a lesson I’ve learned from you. Others, too, but there’s no doubt you were the one that was the most annoyingly perverse.  You’ll be fine, Tsunagu.  I have to apologize, again. Allow me to explain: when you were hurt in the capture of All for One, I glanced as far into your future as I could. I’m sorry that I lied. I broke my previous promise ( again, I know ) not to utilize my quirk to the “full” extent that it would’ve mentally caused me an abnormal amount of exertion, fear and anguish. Even though there will always be pain or disappointment, I have a feeling you’ll finally grasp onto the life you’d wanted.  So go, and carve the future in your favor.
