Lilly Murphy is a botanist who traveled to Hope County, Montana to research the enigmatic Bliss flowers, only to be swept up in the cult's activity and fall for one of its leaders- Faith.

Growing up in a big city (she never states where), Lilly was not around nature much as a child. However she did get to experience the outdoors at their best while visiting her grandparents in Hope County, and those were the best times of her childhood.

Lilly then developed such a fascination with nature- plants specifically- and studied hard to get a degree in botany. She moved to Montana to begin studying its mountainous foliage and eventually heard of a flower called Bliss, which allegedly had supernatural powers.

Unknowing that Hope County was in the midst of a takeover by the cult Eden's Gate, Lilly traveled to the valley to research these strange flowers. As she became increasingly fascinated by them and devoted her time to researching them, less and less non-cult folk wanted to speak to her. Peggies sure did, although she brushed them off.

She began to feel lonely and isolated, and contemplated leaving Hope County, until she met Faith. Not only was Faith kind and wanted to be friendly to her, she also knew quite a lot about the Bliss moonflowers. So this soon became Lilly's closest friend.

Even as Faith would try to convert Lilly to join Eden's Gate, Lilly brushed it off, and Faith was strangely unbothered due to her romantic feelings towards Lilly and internal doubting of her "brother's" cult. Lilly made Faith feel worlds better than Joseph ever did.

One time, Faith attempted to bring Lilly into the Bliss. But unlike others who entered it, who would become serene and full of peace, Lilly reacted differently. She became incredibly anxious and verged on having a panic attack, grabbing Faith's hands and begging her to take her back to the real world. Since Faith has feelings for Lilly and respects her, she did as Lilly wished and brought her out of it.

Lilly then knew why the Resistence was so adamant about destroying Bliss moonflowers and especially its drug form. She begged Faith to stop her involvement in spreading it, and while Faith's deep internal increasing hatred of her "brother's" plan wanted her to listen to Lilly, she feared Joseph's reaction should she pull out of her duties.

Lilly met Lacy only a few times, and eventually when Faith was not around her, Lilly confided in Lacy that she was developing a new species of moonflowers that produce pollen that once pollinating a Bliss-producing moonflower, it would get rid of the drug qualities, allowing the flowers to be regular moonflowers, but begged Lacy not to tell Faith. Lacy did not.

As Lacy had her final confrontation with Faith in her bunker and heard of Faith's backstory, she felt sympathy towards her. Just before Lacy could either kill or apprehend Faith, Lilly stepped in and began crying and holding Faith, who then asked Lilly to now only call her Rachel, as she planned to begin a new life outside of the cult (despite being a prisoner of the Resistence).

Lilly helped Lacy take Rachel out of the bunker and stop the Bliss drug production as Lilly explained her mutated moonflowers to Rachel- she was happy that Lilly was able to find new use for them as she would be sad to see them go otherwise.

Once escaped from the bunker, Rachel was held captive by the Hope County Cougars at the prison, but allowed supervised visits with Lilly to Lilly's new research spots where non-Bliss moonflowers began to bloom. As Rachel sat and watched a garden of these new flowers with Lilly, she kissed her and said she'd always felt "something" for her. Lilly is embarrassed but admits the same.
