A STILL LIFE OF DISORDER (2020) Archival pigment print on platine fibre rag | Edition of 8 + 2 AP Large: Image size 68 x 102cm Extra large: Image size 100 x 150cm An ecological concern finds expression in Waters’ underwater still life series which references Northern Renaissance paintings in lighting and composition. Her underwater works feature live marine creatures amongst rocks and flowers to evoke other-worldly landscapes with a palpable feeling of space and slowed time. Waters’ representations of luxuriant, yet fragile beauty are a reminder of the imminent loss of whole species and ecosystems as a result of climate change. LINK IN PROFILE #Repost @lilliwaters ・・・ For the ‘Anthropocene: The Age of Humans’ series, I used lace for the first time in my work. I often source secondhand fabrics, but have been hesitant to use lace specifically, perhaps it was too old fashioned and laden with inherent meaning, but days before embarking on the five day road trip, I succumbed to my love for it. For me, lace represents romanticism, the feminine, a single thread of delicate beauty combined with the strength of many intertwining threads, and in many ways, symbolises the way in which I aim to represent the female figure, an honest beauty combined with strength. Lace has often been symbolic of modesty and obedience, of rites of passage, of fragility and chastity, but also debauchery.
