thinking about putting canon-ish papyrus through dusttale.
because my man would softlock you and sit. and play doom eternal on a console with you because he thinks you'd like that just to spend time with you and be your friend.
like he wouldn't say: YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS no he'd think: oh this person is probably insecure about their combat prowess or wants to act out to a world that's hurt them. I should be their friend and show them healthy ways to deal with that!
like puzzles.
let dust belief papyrus be a nerd. where is his whimsy. like look. he can silk all day and be depressed but I feel like papyrus coping mechanisms different from sans.
he's the type to try and understand. to solve. to maybe connect?
at first it was definitely about him being the hero but now he understands that he too deluded himself in a fantasy to protect his pride. uch like how player is doing this.
he's not the great papyrus. he never was. but he can be great regardless. by choice. no persona or facades required. he wants to help you.
because he understands why you're doing this. kinda.
you want to be the villain right? you want infamy instead of popularity you want everyone to know you and fear you.
he understands the lonely aspect of it. which is exactly WHY he wants to help you. it's personal. as if he's looking into an evil mirror and saying: let's just drop the heroic and villainous pretenses this isn't a story book anymore. I want to change I want to help you.
like HE'S NOT GONNA go through an edgy murder phase. a lonely world that he tried to fit in but never felt popular enough. nobody cared enough. to be erased.
forgotten with each run.
he kinda gets it.
maybe you can be edgy and lonely together? you don't have to do this. there's so many more ways to fight to spar. to test your limits. to reward your growth not by a number but by an abstract feeling.
papyrus isn't stupid.
he's definitely naive but that can also be his strength. specially when he's exposed to the anomalies cruelty.
despite everything it's still you.
I find papyrus being different but at his core still a lovable dork and goofball a much more compelling story than him simply caving into nihilism like sans.
and it can blow up on his face the player can still choose to stab him in the back.
but he'll never stop trying.
because to him he no longer sees the anomaly as a demon. he understands small parts from his own experience. he's not scared of you he's not resentful.
because he knows you're emotionally cut off. "you can't afford to care" he knows someone like that too.
so he'll probably try connecting to you on a different way.
not whatever sans did. he's not that petty. he doesn't care about winning your game when he himself doesn't even agree on how you're playing it in the first place.
like papyrus could actually kick your ass you know that right.
he won't kill you. probably leave you at 1hp but he'd be more stern.
like... brute force isn't his thing. he doesn't like seeing you in pain either. he wants to find a solution for you AND his world. because you're also his friend too.
right? at least... you cared enough to remember him? he's going to try. if you don't listen then... he won't push it but he owes you NOTHING. he doesn't owe you some grand anti hero bullshit.
can I just say that the weird route give COMPLETELY different vibes than genocide in Undertale.
in genocide the music is exciting you want to fight you want to see the characters do their best test their limits you're having F U N
weird route... feels like you're not playing as yourself but what the world assumes you'd want to be as cruel and as an apathetic puppet master.
perhaps it hold true. perhaps it's how you experiment on the characters to open them up. see how they tick. but deltarune feels WEIRD like the name is a great portrayal.
I don't feel empowered I don't feel goody twirling my evil mustache I feel OFF I feel weird.
maybe it's because the situation break my disassociation from my own experiences regarding manipulation and abuse.
or maybe it's because the soul themselves is forcing itself to "proceed"
like it feels less about a power hungry cruel demon...
and reminds me of the times I'd sacrifice my physical and mental health to achieve a small insignificant goal because that's how little I simply value my own health.
it feels like that part of my brain that whispers to keep running when I know my legs can only walk. that toxic part of my brain that DETERMINATION that lacks "consideration"
constantly hard on itself constantly treating it's body as disposable as long as it gets the job done...
guys I just realized something...
in Undertale the player steals charas identity.
it's not that we name Chara/Kris/name insert.
player snatches their identity to be able to establish and existential link with the world.
it's not intentional.
but Chara is dead. the reason they wake up is because player assumes their "name" and by proxy their presence is felt because Chara is literally attached to the name.
does that mean the vessel in deltarune was meant to be out eyes and ears?
and the reason we were provided a vessel is not to body snatch random human identies dead or alive.
"despite everything it's still you" meaning frisk is frisk
"it's me Chara" that's not Chara dreemur. it's" "me" who the hell narrates something in first person? the reader.
Chara dreemur the narrator was saying that to the player because they had assumed their identity.
I'm sure this has some religious connotations like: god made man in his image but the line between the vessel and it's soul only ONLY blurs in genocide. in pacifist the monsters call the human frisk after the good ending.
why?
it's dissociation. it's quite literally a byproduct of LV that distances the person from the world bringing them closer to a state of dissociation.
now at LV 20 they understand.
they aren't fully you but they understand how you see the world.
it's not even in a: you turn them evil.
I like to think the player's LV has always been 20. even in pacifist.
but with each kill the vessel adapts more of the player's features.
that's some cool cosmic horror right there.
idk what I'm cooking but I'm cooking
i think dust grave would probably have an actual really long history in regards to magic and dark world wars.
the roaring as they call it has happened plenty of times in the past and washed away reality changing it again and again. chunks of reality have been glitched or corroded beyond recognition.
this itself isn't related to resets or the player's power but it's the human and monsters undoing.
it's a result of their wishes.
you know how you can wish upon a star? and how stars seem to carry a heavy meaning in Undertale. save points are stars the stars on the caves ceiling...
I think that in dust grave people could LITERALLY wish upon stars. and that created a dark fountain WITH A LIGHT WHIRLPOOL or something. the dark fountain was the "stars" shadow.
and each wish carried heavy consequences.
this wish was attempted to be hoarded and monopolized by those in power but due to it's chaotic nature it couldn't simply be controlled.
was the first human monster war... about these stars? we're they fighting for literally becoming a demigod in the shadow land?
you could TAKE A WHOLE ASS PROPERTY IN THE DARK WORLD DO YOU KNOW HOW HUMANS WOULD GO CRAZY FOR THAT?
like I feel like they eventually started to lose these fallen stars so they begin to kill each other to steal it.
then finally there's nothing left.
idk.
I definitely think deltarune has something deeper going on.
something that was not a simple human monster war. something that is deeply interconnected with how the world reaches out to us.
are you there are we connected.
like a wish. a prayer.
are we. a star??.???

I have more headcanons! These are kinda based on my and other people's past asks.
I don't know what slay the princess is but the platonic obsession from the players side is such a cool concept! I imagine they would be dramatic with it and to piss dust off might just pluck and kill flowey to make him into a flower bouquet for Dust, or almost get killed by him so they could kiss his hand to annoy him, and give him a golden heart necklace as some sort of chain to them. Silly smug bastard Player my beloved <3
About the Frisk comment, I think that when the Players gets a vessel and Frisk is just empty and left behind, the player might just set them up like a doll when they're bored and not fighting. Like how a child plays dollhouse they might sit Frisk down in Toriel's empty house and have a teaparty with the kid while waiting for Dust to find them.
Dust would probably walk in on the morbid scene and see the barley living child and the psycho sitting together. The player themself treating their old body with such tender care but at the same time like just a useless ragdoll.
They to talk so sweetly to the cusp of a child, and yet their voice has the undertone of someone filled with anger and jealousy. It must be disgusting to witness.
Sorry this is so long lol! I have fun sharing my headcanons with you <3 / platonic
it's pretty fun to read these asks! don't be shy to send more!
tw: angst
tw: dark fic
The fact that Chara actually calls the player a Demon in the second genocide route makes sense for why the Player's personally made vessel would look like a demon. Cool reference!
I love your short fics!
(About the newest short fic btw)
well, they've been demoted to something beyond even the demon king as far as dust's concerned.
he doesn't believe in angels or demons or whatever nonsense was the deltarune prophecy supposed to be.
but the world demon does simplify a lot of needless explanation. he ironically calls them human with some heavy quotation and emphasis on it that's sarcastic.
kinda like a ridiculing pet name.
"human. something you can pretend to be but will never be able to fully become."
he's mocking them. but still calls the human. just human. not their name, not their identity...
when faced with them it's just "human".
he's not interested in knowing it's name or it's goal. he's done with it's bullshit. he doesn't care.
and well? player's inputted name is AAA because they couldn't be bothered to come up with a name. and he knows that's not their name anyway. so why even ask?
though of he does mean business... or is desperate enough to call for THEIR HELP in some... very small chance...
he'd call them "______".
of course it's just a blank characterless sheet with six empty slots. but to them? that's DIFFERENT. THAT will instantly have them flipping the dynamic or throw whatever sadistic game the have away because they know HE'S ABOUT TO BREAK.
they don't want him to break. so if he actually calls out to them they'll instantly drop everything and do anything ANYTHING to make things better. because they know unless SOMETHING HORRIBLE is happening dust isn't going to put his pride aside to even grace them with a name.
if he calls their name, they'll be there. even if it's so little, even if they don't really care... they can't lose him. they WON'T lose him. no matter what reset they have to pay or whatever hacking there is they'll tear through time to get there.
though... they'll probably go back to their evil ways when things calm down...
what I'm saying is that player only does bad things when they know there's no consequences or that they canBEND the rules.
if things get serious (like dust being erased from existence) their whole playful apathetic nature will get thrown off the window and they'll go head to head with whatever FOOL DATED TO MESS WITH THEIR TOY.
they're extremely protective and caring when they deem events as ACTUALLY harmful...
which is... a bit surprising. even for them.
Imagine if the player got bored or something and used Y/N as a vessel to flirt with Dust.
That would be so out of pocket.
hmmm. well that is a good idea but...
I was thinking something even more interesting.
I won't elaborate since that plotline is for my Thornbound souls fic but yeah I've had this idea before. just... with a plot twist or... two
in the meantime though enjoy this short little fic!
