Did you know that this lovely beauty, Strelizia, is the official flower of Los Angeles? Did you also know this beauty it has a play as well as a movie named after its most common name? Bird of Paradise, the 1912 play was transformed into a tropical romantic drama in 1932 featuring the very exotic and lovely Delores Del Rio. Filmed in Hawaii it featured a scandalous scene of Del Rio swimming naked. Oh my! Sadly, Del Rio’s character ends up jumping into a volcano. But lucky for us, the Bird of Paradise plant, a nectar fountain for hummingbirds, thrives. Is it any wonder that this sultry native symbolizes creativity and uniqueness? From past artists, like Georgia O’keefe, to today’s artists, it continues to inspire artists of all mediums.
