I think in a lot of other fandoms, characters like Yao and Ilyukhina would have been long ignored and forgotten (as they are not skinny pale boys people can shove into ships), but what sets PHM apart from that even before we know who they are, we know that they were loved. In the book, Ryland feels warmth towards them and sadness as their deaths before he fully knows who he is. In the movie, the funeral is one of the first things we see. That pre-disposes the audience to care for them.

I’ll probably think of something more profound to say about this later but I needed to write the point down.

Saw someone say that Eva Stratt is Lawful Evil and I have not disagreed with someone this strongly in a While.

this is a woman doing incredibly illegal things (therefore, chaotic) to protect billions of people without a care for herself (therefore, good). Eva Stratt is textbook chaotic good, people just can’t imagine Chaotic Good as anything but Pinkie Pie types anymore.

Edit: While she does have lawful backing, but within the alignment chart, lawful tends to be more about a strict moral code (whether or not that lines up with the actual law is unimportant), and Stratt explicitly says she doesn’t care about morals. She will do anything to protect humanity

Evil and good exist on a scale of self interest vs the interests of many, and she has No Self Interest. Everything Eva does is for the saving of humanity

I think it’s so interesting, looking at Iron Lung as Ryland Grace Failed AU because it’s EXACTLY what Eva Stratt said would happen. Humanity is in a constant state of war for resources. There’s what, some few hundreds of people left? Instead of working together and trying to ensure the safety of each other, they are killing people that they cannot afford to lose. I think a lot (almost a stupid amount) about Filament Station and the 62 people (and that’s only on the side of the Consolidation) that died there. That is 62 people worth of human knowledge that the world will never get back. Some of them could have been historians, some of them could have been storytellers, some of them could have been teachers. There is a chance that the knowledge that they had dies with them.
