Between all the frustration and dismay, the other feeling I regularly got was pity. As awful as the characters were, I could clearly see the cycle of abuse taking place and it hurt to know that sometimes, that’s just how it goes. I think Emily’s portrayal of domestic abuse really hit the nose in terms of how it can quite literally be haunting. This is definitely NOT a love story, I’ll tell you that much. I did, however really enjoy reading this book! I especially love the ending line.

“I lingered round them, under that benign sky: watched the moths fluttering among the heath and harebells, listened to the soft wind breathing through the grass, and wondered how any one could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth.”

How Lockwood seemed like a virtual non-character throughout the book annoyed me so much, but that last line 100% makes up for it.
