This isn't the time for counting. Counting might help with sleep, actually. She doesn't want to sleep. That's the whole problem.

Right. He's still waiting for an answer. Her mouth opens. Closes. Oops. She forgot to think of an answer. He's been waiting too long. She chuckles and sheepishly raises a shoulder. That's an answer, sort of. It shows him that she's paying attention. That her glassy-eyed stare doesn't mean she's passed out with her eyes open again. She blinks away the fatigue, shakes her head, then gives a more animated shrug. That doesn't mean it's a better answer.

"Um." She pulls her head back. Furrows her brows. Wrinkles her nose. Grins. "That's a dumb question. Just woke up right now. I was totally zoned out."

Ingvild hasn’t slept more than an hour at a time since the battle on the Dolphin. August’s overprotectiveness has kept her from seeking comfort after the nightmares; it’s hard enough having him treat her like she’s unable to protect herself, she doesn’t need to add to that image by letting him know how shaken she still is. She’s fairly certain she’s beaten sense into him now, and knocking her captain on his ass gave her some freedom to determine their course.

Which is how they’ve ended up in Shipwreck for a few days, even though they don’t really need to stock up yet. Ingvi needs to ask a favor of an old friend before she can spend months at sea with a man carrying too much guilt over her death, and another man she’s starting to realize might mean more to her than she previously thought. If their last meeting told her anything, it’s that he might understand her current predicament better than any.

10. what are things they are more or less open about now compared to their original world?

this is super interesting to me because it depends on how you define "open" I guess ? like Jack has a modern sensibility and liberal attitude even within his canon, so that view of the world can be extrapolated to a modern verse fairly easily. a modern setting also benefits a lot of his existing opinions about things within his canon, such as not ever wanting to get married or have children or live that "perfect" civilised life. but, in the same way, Jack is closed off about similar things in his modern verse to his canon — he still won't talk about his trauma and still has a hard time opening up to people. that stuff doesn't really change, it's just the details that change between each verse.

one thing to mention I guess is Jack's sexuality — it's not that Jack hides his queerness in canon, quite the contrary, but in a modern setting he actually has a better framework for talking about it and using it as a part of his identity. in his canon he isn't going to refer to himself as bisexual because he doesn't have a modern understanding of that term. he knows that attraction isn't restricted for him to gender ( and doesn't grow up in an environment that is actively hostile towards it either ), but in a modern verse he can actually take and use the term bisexual as a way of understanding himself, which is helpful in modern too because he isn't as immune to the hostilities and discrimination against it. so in one respect he is more open about being queer and can actually use that vocabulary in conversation with others, but that is also arguably a way of dealing with the fact that in a modern setting he is more influenced by cultural norms seeing as he grows up within a modern civilised society.

He wasn't particular about the sorting systems used in libraries but there was a wrong way and a right way and he - he wasn't particular but usually he liked things to be, um. Right. And it - it hadn't been busy, all the.. robot-y... people had come and gone, it really was just Adrian, and it was a public library.

He was just re-organising them just a little. To fix it.

"Oh, good." Oh, good. He climbed down the little step-ladder he was using (no higher than the second rung - that was high enough, thank-you) when he saw that someone had joined him: one of the volunteers? Maybe. He had told Adrian where to find the library. (The book Adrian had wanted to check out, some old and hard-to-find recipebook Trudy had loved, was secure in his satchel.) "Do you - does New Jericho have a label-maker or something, these books are all - they're organised wrong. I don't mind it but I thought I'd fix it. Since I'm here."

The books of this shelf he was working on - almost all of them - were spread haphazardly on the floor around him, in various, well-organised stacks.

It was awful, really, how much he sounded like her husband in that moment.

Lucas was a naval officer himself and was often away because of it, leaving Corinne in a house far too big for just one person to consider it home; but when he was there, their conversations went about as spectacularly as Henry's impression. Lucas was never really one for socialising, except when necessity dictated it.

She hid a sudden grimace. He wasn't home now, actually, and she really didn't want to think of him when Henry was being so perfectly splendid a guest.

greed and envy snaked itself up his spine as he watched the henry see it all too. harry reached out, hand cupping henry's elbow, fingers caressing his arm through the thin fabric of his shirt. he could feel his body heat, feel the hesitation beneath the surface of his skin, and within the same breath, he read henry's rejection in his gaze as something in them withdrew.

harry sighed, relieved and disappointed all at once. he leaned into henry's hands as they curled into his shirt, he leaned closer, grin matching henry's as he tipped his head to one side and stared at henry's mouth.

              “  ummm  …  ”    she  blinks,  more  surprise  than  alarm  or  like  she’d  been  caught.  she  finds  where  he’s  looking  and  breaks  out  into  a  beaming  smile,  just  as  amazed  at  his  discovery  as  ever,  the  memory  of  finding  the  white  and  green  button  up  having  completely  slipped  away  from  her.    “  oh  my  gosh,  yeah!  ”    her  giggles  fill  the  air  as  she  turns  around,  looking  in  the  mirror  she  had  been  completely occupied  with  moments  before,  now  looking  at  something  entirely  new.  not  that  she  can  remember  whatever  it  was  before,  this  was  so  much  more  exciting.    “  i  look,  like,  just  like  you!  ”    allie  turns  to  face  him,  her  eyes  alight  with  idea.    “  oh,  wait!  ”    she  pulls  a  scrunchie  from  the  little  basket  she  had  asked  him  to  hold,  tying  her  hair  back  into  a  low  ponytail-  and  looping  it,  seeing  as  she  had  much  more  hair  than  he  did  -before  gently  tugging  out  her  front  strands.  the  fairy  girl  faces  him,  shining  with  something  almost  like  pride.    “  okay,  look!  now  i,  like,  totes’  do!  ”    but,  of  course,  she  finds  more  things  have  escaped  her.  she  probably  needs  more  bracelets,  and  at  least  she  has  those.  friendship  brackets!  in  all  of  the  colors  of  the  world.    “  oh!  and  i  don’t  have  your  super  cool  necklace!  all  of  mine  are, like, super, um,  dainty and little.  it’s-  it’s  like  …  it’s  like  if  a  charm  bracket  was  a  necklace!  a  charm  necklace!  ”

              the  mirror,  again,  getting  a  little  distracted  by  some  of  the  stickers  and  doodles  she  had  put  on  it  before  she  realizes  another  henry  staple  that  she’s  missed.  this  time,  she  pouts,  almost  fussing  about  the  never  ending  flow  of  thoughts  that  pour  out  of  her  mouth  the  moment  they  appear  to  her.    “  ‘cept  i  don’t  think  i  can  unbutton  the  shirt  like  you  can,  ‘cause  my  boobs  are,  like,  right  there.  and  i’ll  get  in  trouble  then!  like,  public  decency?  i  don’t  even  get  it.  i’m  decent!  that  just  means  nice!  and,  like,  everyone  thinks  so!  that’s  the  public!  ”    fretting  over  it  a  little  more,  messing  with  the  hem  of  it  and  tying  it  at  her  waist.  allie  checks  again  in  the  mirror,  looking  from  every  angle  she  can.    “  does  this  count?  ”    she  asks,  gaze  moving  to  him  and  her  smile  comes  back,  just  as  bright  as  she  finds  that  she  can’t  be  upset  looking  at  him.    “  this  is  so  silly!  we’re  twinning!  i  love  you  so  much,  like,  forever  and  ever!  ”
