It was Christmas Eve. Morse was working later than perhaps he should've been, given the holiday, but every so often his eyes glanced up at the clock on the wall, waiting for five o'clock to strike. When it did, he was up like a shot and out the door, bidding Happy Christmas to everyone he passed on the way there. This was the first Christmas he could remember not being miserable and empty. He was actually...cheery. It was a bit frightening to those who knew him best, he supposed, but he didn't care. Couldn't care. Hell, it was nearly Christmas!

The night of TOSCA's Christmas concert arrives. Morse dresses smartly in his best dress suit with a red tie for the occasion. He greets his fellow choir members and stands with the other tenors in the back row. He flips through his music fussily, looking for the first song. 

"You're more tense than usual, Morse," says his neighbor, Michael. "What's gotten into you? You're never nervous."

Morse clears his throat, adjusting his tie. "My fiancee's in the audience."

Michael, who is approximately ten years his senior, raises his eyebrows. "Well. Congratulations, Morse. Remind me I owe you a drink at the after-party."

Morse blushes. "Thanks, Michael."

The conductor taps his stick on his music stand, and the choir members straighten to attention. Morse finds himself standing impossibly straighter, hoping the soft lighting makes him look good. He wants to impress Norah. 

It didn't feel right going to the Christmas tree farm without Joyce, so Morse picked a time when he knew she'd be home and Gwen wouldn't be to ask if she wanted to go with them when they went for a tree.

"Endeavour, how can you take such risks? Honestly?" Joyce asked as soon as he said hello.

"I know, but it didn't seem right if I didn't at least ask you. And Gwen can't stop you from seeing me." Morse twirled the cord on his phone. "How about it, Joycie? Please?"

Joyce sighed. "All right, Endeavour. I'll bring my truck and meet you."

Morse was not actually confident in most social situations, but he wanted to reach out and make an effort to get to know Norah's friends. If nothing else, he supposed, they could talk about music.

Snow in Oxford had been quite sudden. It was barely touching winter temperatures a week ago, and now Morse woke up, on his weekend off, to thick, powdery snow falling down in clumps. As he dressed in the mid-morning light, he noticed that the entire ground was white, thick with snow that had fallen overnight.

Morse closed the door to his house with his weight and sighed deeply. Between the stress of the general work week, a new case, and trying very hard to keep himself healthy, he was exhausted. Even though he'd been trying his best to eat three meals a day, liquid lunches were more often than not his lot, which really was not good for keeping the weight on. He'd slimmed just slightly, a barely noticeable amount, but Morse's body just wasn't putting up with it. Fatigue had begun to set in mid-week, and he could only be thankful the case was solved, and a petty but clever thief was behind bars.
