Am I the only archaeologist who... doesn't get the licking rocks thing?
Like there's other ways to tell between stone and bone?

There are some situations where it is almost impossible to distinguish between ceramic and bone. Those often get stored separately, so we need a quick way to determine what it is.
Some sites/projects have a no licking policy, others are lick permissive. It really depends. I've worked on sites with each policy, and at the end of the day it actually doesn't make a huge difference. But it's not a secret and it's not actually as cool as it sounds, which is why we laugh when news/media makes a big deal out of it.
