In a nutshell, in the post Civil War era (of the 1870-1890s), they were the first black soldiers to serve in the U.S. Army. Their name the “Buffalo Soldiers” was bestowed upon them out of respect for the their fierce fighting abilities. The Buffalo Soldiers fought like a cornered buffalo; who like a buffalo, having suffered wound after wound, would still refuse to die. These soldiers were not only pioneers in post-slavery America (about 80 percent of the troops were ex-slaves) they also paved the way in the movement towards African American rights.
