The African Union chairman, President Alpha Conde of Guinea, has cried out for demanded prosecutions over a "despicable" trade "from another era". . . The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres also calledΒ on the international community to "unite in fighting this ongoing trend in Libya". While watching the footage, several unidentified and able-bodied men were being offered up as a group of "big strong boys for farm work". The footage was gotten from CNN, obtained from the capital city of Tripoli, Libya. Does anybody need a digger? This is a digger, a big strong man, he'll dig," the auctioneer announced, who was dressed in camouflageΒ and heard saying.Β Migrants trying to reach Europe have spoken of being held by smugglers and forced to work for little or no money. The men were sold for as little as Β£300, the American broadcaster reported. . . After the footage emerged, protests erupted in Paris and other cities, while Libyans expressed solidarity with the victims with the hashtag #LibyansAgainstSlavery.Β The Libyan government launched an investigation into the slave auctions but said the international community needed to provide more support if it was going to tackle the problem. . . . . "I abhor these appalling acts and call upon all competent authorities to investigate these activities without delay and to bring the perpetrators to justice. I have asked the relevant United Nations actors to actively pursue this matter," declared the UNΒ Secretary-General in a statement. . .
