Reading Zoe’s Hall’s THE APPLE PIE TREE to classes yesterday made me all nostalgic for when my kids were little and we read it. It’s a great way to teach Kinder-1st about bees, pollination and the seasonal cycle of fruit trees. - 📚. The other book was a great find in the library when you need a Thanksgiving themed book for 4th-6th grade. It’s full of history and facts. Did you know that in the U.S., we consume 80 million pounds of cranberries on Thanksgiving? Such fun having classes estimate! - 📚. I subbed at one of my favorite schools (yes, they may all be my favorites 😂) on Friday, and the librarian left the best lesson plan ever featuring this book — QUIT CALLING ME A MONSTER by Jory John & Bob Shea. I read it to all the grades, 1st through 6th, and we had awesome discussions about bullying (and for the older kids, social media bullying) and choosing kindness. - 📚. This was such a good reminder to me that picture books can be appropriate at all ages and lesson plans can be stretched to meet the older grades’ interests. I seriously had an unbelievably good day with these kiddos and learned that The Golden Rule is still passed on! - 📚. SYNOPSIS: Floyd Peterson is so much more than shaggy purple fur and pointy monster teeth-- why can't people just see him for him? Subbing at one of my very favorite schools, and the librarian left such great, classic reads for the Kinder classes. - 📚. I remember reading DAVID GOES TO SCHOOL to my kiddos. What I didn’t know is that David Shannon based the stories on a book he made when he was in elementary school, and the book consisted of drawings of David doing things he wasn’t supposed to do with only the words “No David” printed on the page. As a substitute librarian, I’ve been going from school to school and you could’ve heard a pin drop in every 4th, 5th and 6th grade class when I started reading from CRENSHAW by Katherine Applegate. - 📚. Students are immediately drawn to the tale of a 5th grade boy whose imaginary friend comes back during a time when his family is going through some turmoil. - 📚. It resonates with this age in a way few books do. I’m so grateful to Katherine for writing books like this, and I’m grateful to the kids who listened so very respectfully today. - 📚.
