I have only had two jobs in my adult life, one was working in a grocery store, and the other working in a public library. When I graduated university with a BA in political science, the goal was to work for an NGO. Well that didn’t really work out, turns out NGO jobs are kinda hard to get, and they pay shit. I mean one job as an admin assistant for an NGO would pay less full time then I was making working part time as a library assistant.
But being a librarian was never a job I thought I would ever have, but I think its one I have grown into. It totally fits my personality, and I love working with like minded people. I often get asked how I was able to get a job as a librarian even before I graduated with my Masters of Library and Information Science, and the answer is experience. Yes I had worked in Public Libraries for a long time, but even when I worked in libraries I had so many different roles, shelver, library assistant, circ, programmer, etc, etc. I had done every job, and so when I interviewed for jobs I had so much to draw upon. I recently asked the person who interviewed me why I got the job, and she told me that it was evident I had done my research, and thus they could picture me in the role. I was confident, and I let that be known, I wanted the job and so I did the research.
I know I was incredibly lucky to get a permanent librarian job, with benefits right out of school, but I also put the effort in before hand, and I think that is truly what it key.
