Snowflake Glass
Chalk another one up for a fantastic library system!
(This one was last November.)
I was quite excited (and curious) when I saw glass etching on the library events, signed up for it, and found it was fun . . . and something I could potentially even do easily at home.
It's done with a simple (and reusable, evidently) cream! (Learn something new every day; I'd never heard of such a thing before.)
The woman running it also showed us one that she'd done before with a reverse stencil - blocking out a shape and etching everything else. And you can do it with anything that blacks out or leaves out space - like masking tape cut into shapes, apparently.
I used premade stencils (with sticky on the backs) made by the same company who makes the cream, however.
Used the same two stencils multiple times; thought about using multiple designs of snowflakes - but they didn't all match styles, and I liked this one best.
Library event (first time)
âAnd as the sun goes down, Giggles curls up on your bed and rests her big head beside you. Tonight sheâll play in your dreams and guide you away from all those awful nightmares. All you have to do is believe in the magic of your own imagination, and let that little voice inside you speak.â Paradise recited from the picture book, her voice a perfect mix of respect for the kids, and silly excitement. The picture was of a chihuahua sized Shine curled up like a puppy on the bed, around her other toys sat, and a small child was yawning. âGo outside, eat new foods, try something you never thought you could, because Giggles will do it with you.â The drawings showed her munching on an orange next to a middle school aged child, the two of them high fiving. âAdventures are something youâll never grow out of, if you keep that spark of a silly laugh alive. Giggle along with her, and see what there is to see in this amazing world around you!âÂ
She smiled at (insert watcher), or she thought she did, since she couldnât see them. She knew Halo was there, and that was enough. Sheâd spent enough years with Shine to work with invisible figures. Instead she focused on the event at hand.
âŠ
She packed up the last remaining book, luckily there were only a few of them. She got to walk off with a nice bit of cash, and the smiles of all those kids. That one little boy in particular had caught her heart when he hugged the doll and gave her the biggest smile. His parents had a weird look when they saw what Giggle along looked like, but they let him keep it.Â
Paradise caught sight of a familiar form. With a pair of slightly blue tinted glasses, a cozy gray hat, and comfortable clothes, was Shine. Para swung herself over a chair and skidded to a halt next to her Godly girlfriend. âI see you made yourself smaller again~.â She slid a hand along her arm. âHow did your big fight scene go? I was getting a little worried there.âÂ
Shine still reacted to the touch, which made Para Very happy, but she wasnât bantering back. Instead she shrank another half inch and pulled Para closer. â...ItâŠwent.âÂ
Paradise pulled them away from the groups of people into a nook and sat her down on a stepstool. Para herself sat on the floor so theyâd be closer in sitting height. She didnât mind looking up a little, she was pretty used to this position. âHey, whatâs got my sugarplum glum?âÂ
Shine couldnât help but giggle just a tiny bit. It was enough. âIâŠI lost the fight, and worse than that I lost track of my boy again. I was so close, I was so feathering close to getting him back.âÂ
Paradise rested her hand on her girlfriendâs thigh and shook her head. âItâll be alright, youâre a God, remember?â She wasnât completely sure who the kid Shine was so focused on was outside of some panicked descriptions of torture done to said child and a single gushing motherly rant about how cute he was. âYou can rely on me.âÂ
Shine shoved herself off the stepstool and into Paraâs arms, not the first time theyâd been like this, but it wasnât usually due to comfort reasons. âIâm so- Iâm terrified of what they might be doing to him while Iâm gone. I had to stop by Andyâs place just to get my bearings back.âÂ
She knew about Andy, and hopefully theyâd get to meet soon. âHey, I got you.âÂ
âheh..I know.âÂ
âŠ.
They were walking along a street in South Bend Michigan at Paraâs request to get out of Hatchfield for a bit. Shine looked less upset, but she was clearly distracted and talking to someone. It wasâŠWell Paradise wasnât going to tell her magical partner to get off the multidimensional phone when she was dealing with whatever was happening. If Shine didnât want to talk about it, it was for a reason.Â
Instead she focused on the donuts theyâd picked up. She loved watching her girlfriendâs face light up around food. It was like seeing someone discover their favorite food, but so far it had been every single thing theyâd tried. It never got old.Â
Their conversation about whether or not a cat would be safe to bring into the black and white was interrupted by a call that even Paradise could hear. âMama!âÂ
They froze. Shine took paradise by both hands and her eyes were literally glowing with emotion. âThatâs him. Thatâs my baby. Iâll be back soon, I promise. Iâm sending us back to your place.â Without her usual dramatics they were instantly inside Paradiseâs new home. Para stumbled but caught herself in Shine's arms. âStay here please.âÂ
âWait-âÂ
âYes?âÂ
Paradise pulled her still smaller body into a kiss. âI love you, ok? I love you and if you need help, Iâll do what this little human body can do to the best of my ability.â She held on an extra second and pressed one more kiss to her cheek. âCome back to me soon, ok?âÂ
Shine shivered and tugged her down for a goodbye kiss. âI will, so keep yourself safe.â She was gone.Â
âMy Government Means to Kill Meâ is the June - August selection for the San Francisco Public Library On the Same Page reading initiative. I am honored.
On the Same Page has also arranged for me to be in conversation with Pulitzer-prize winning author Andrew Sean Greer in the African American Center Exhibit Space at the Main Library on Wednesday, August 14 at 6pm (Click here for more info).
Got to wear my bear ears for a library work event today and felt like @bamsaraâs Y/N. Maybe someday Iâll be allowed to wear the jacket to work too.

To be entirely fair, he wasnât the type for libraries. When on the job, his focus was intense. If he had been paying greater attention, he would have noted the tasteful decorations and prettily garbed attendees. He had a single task to accomplish while in Vannes but couldnât resist toying with that little bastard a bit. The little note. It amused him. Useless. If the prick had done his job, he wouldnât have to be here tonight, wasting his time in this absolute tit of a country. He knew how to blend. Not pretty enough to catch anyoneâs eye but not so homely as to stand out either. Neutral. He moved to the archway on the upper level, cordoned off for the event. Only preserved volumes here. He didnât care about the books, just making certain not to inflict any damage such that his presence here would be marked in any way. Consideration out of pure convenience. He had stashed his equipment just ⊠ah yes, there it was. Sliding on the gloves, he withdrew the firearm from the bag and slowly screwed in the silencer. Flipping up the scope, he let his eye drag through the room.
There he was. The little pissant. What the fuck was his name again? Something suitably fucking pretentious. Aramis or some shit like that. Could take him out right now. Just standing there. Pretty boy looked tense, like he could use a good ride. Too bad he didnât have time to fuck the useless help. Now he just needed the right âheadsâ to line up. The Duchess of Nantes or the Duke of Maine. Preferably both if he could get them in quick succession. Minimal external casualties. A dull restriction but he could live with it. Now he just had to wait âŠ.
